We have been watching Halloween movies with the kids (Disney Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Hocus Pocus, Ghostbusters), and while my wife has a few more movies that she wants to watch with the kids they all sound pretty meh to me. We will probably watch the Tim Burton Sleepy Hollow at some point, but I am drawing a blank on good Halloween movies. Thoughts (for family or adults)?

  • Hocus Pocus
  • Halloween III: The Season of the Witch (Awful movie, but I can’t help it).
  • The Exorcist
  • Nightmare on Elm Street - original one, (cheesy, I know)
  • Gravity Falls - the Halloween episode - my kids love this.
  • The Conjuring (recent)
  • The Nun (recent)

I loved the Monster Squad as a kid and tried to watch it every Halloween until the VCR ate my tape and it wasn't being shown on tv to record it again. Recently found it on DVD and watched it with my nieces and nephews (ages range from 4 to 16) and they all loved it.

These are good holiday classics, but in the past, it's usually a December viewing.
i don’t know how long the tradition was but I associate it with the weekend after Thanksgiving. Like that Friday night for most of my youth. So that just Feels comfortable, to watch it at that same time. Watching it before temps are below 80 for good just feels sacrilege

For a creepy movie that's "fun scary" and OK for younger kids, we loved the Jack Black Goosebumps (2015). Also fun are ParaNorman (2012) and Tim Burton's Frankenweenie (2012). Lots of great moments in these for adults, too.

For older kids and adults, The Babadook (2014) is pretty darned scary without being a gore-fest.
