Obviously we want the defense to be "better"......but we've had "better" defenses with the 4-3 as well. In fact, pretty much every defense in the history of defenses was better than what we saw last season.

More specifically, what benefits should we expect, from a schematic standpoint, by switching to the 3-4? Will our personnel be better suited for it? Will it hide weaknesses of some of the players that may otherwise be glaring in a 4-3? Will it lead to a better pass rush?

Would love to hear everyone's take on this.

Maybe more exotic fronts in attempt to throw off the QB. The 3-4 is more flexible than the 4-3.

The ability to disguise a blitz stands out for me. Versatility in not knowing who drops and who rushes makes a QB think. I'm hopeful delay of game penalties, forced throws because of pressure and corner backs who play to their strengths could result in bigger plays.

I believe this year our defense will have an identity separate from the offense. I'm tired of the bend but don't break, give up yards until the redzone and compliment the offense just enough to win days are over.

I like this as well.........I'm also hopeful that the new 3-4 is able to adequately contain all that read-option crap that teams like the Niners and Skins are using.

1. More pressure from putting former pass-rushing specialists Junior Galette and Victor Butler on the field for more snaps
2. Better coverage from having quicker, more agile guys like David Hawthorne and Martez Wilson out in space and less big defensive linemen
3. Putting players in their natural position like Cameron Jordan who was a 3-4 defensive end in college and shoehorned into being a 4-3 defensive end in the NFL
4. ???
5. Profit!

this. It's what the 3-4 is designed to do. put two fast OLB's on the field for containment

To not have the worst defense in the NFL.

That would be a good start.

It benefits the younger talent (Galette, Jordan, Hicks, and Wilson principally I think). It's somewhat at the cost of older players (Vlma and Smith principally) but I think we're all ready to move on from that era. So I think primarily, besides the energy the change will bring and the 3-4 blitzing defenses are just more fun to watch, it's about fitting the defense more towards the skillsets of our younger talent, instead of forcing them into somewhat awkward roles for the sake of declining veterans.

the scheme and the style of play should put the Saints back on track. It seems to adjust to what 3G was building: an attacking front with versatile players.
