What happens with Taysom Hill (1 Viewer)

He will compete next year for a starting job as a QB, potentially lose out and be released or kept on as a backup and continued role player depending on the vision of the new coach because nobody is safe especially not a "gadget" player.

.....so to answer your question....its a toss up.

At this point his contract is an anchor for the team. Easiest thing to do is tell him he’s going back to the joker role. If he doesn’t like that, he can retire as well. Maybe injury settlement if the foot doesn’t heal well.

You can’t saddle the new coach with him at QB.

God I hope he doesn’t get the chance to complete. Joker him or gone.

His contract is not the anchor. The anchor is the $24.7M cap hit of MT next season.

1. The contract is not Taysom's fault. He signed it like anyone would.

2. He will compete for the starting job because he's the only viable option at the position that's under contract.

3. If he loses the starting QB competition, he will play his role like he does every year.

4. He's like the least of our worries right now. Worst case for him is, we have great playmaker that knows his defined role. And his contract is structed to reflect both worst case and best case for him.

New Orleans Saints quarterback/tight end/fullback/special teams gunner Taysom Hill agreed to terms on a four-year, $40 million contract extension worth up to $95 million based on incentives related to starting at quarterback, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal contains $22.5 million in total guarantees, slotting Hill just below Cleveland Browns tight end Austin Hooper in most contract metrics.

He helped save us cap money this year, and the contract is only bad if he starts at QB and doesn't produce.

CGM has a potential out this offseason with a dead cap # of $22M per Sportrac. The new coach plus Loomis will have to figure out in a hurry where things stand there. A new coach might be tempted to go into the 22 season as a cap-clearing year starting a bunch of young players. Painful, but basically what Payton did in a couple 7-9 years. The difference is that a new coach might not be looking at 7-9, which was apparently as bad as Payton could do, even when rebuilding/clearing cap.

Taysom Hill's new deal runs to 2025 when he will be 35. Because of Lisfranc surgery, he may not be able to play in 22. And the gap between his pay as a QB vs his pay as a joker /could/ make him leery of committing to the latter full time. That's an anchor right there.

You want to talk about terrible contracts, Andrus Peat. Can't do anything with him this year, $0 cap savings.

Post June 1 Cut cap savings:

Thomas $15.8M
Jordan $15M
Roby $10M (good as gone)
Armstead $7.8M
Jenkins $7.8M
Hurst $3M
Ingram $2.3M
