Saban’s issue in Miami wasn’t just QB.

His issue was that he tried to treat grown men like 18 year olds and the fire and brimstone approach had already worn thin by the start of his second season.

Brees would have in no way had the success he did post injury without Payton tailoring the offense to his skill set. Sure Brees would have been very good, but I doubt he’d have reached A tenth of the numbers he had in NO.

god only knows what would have happened to us if Drew chose Miami.

Saban wouldn’t have went to Alabama. LSU would probably have a couple more national championships. Les Miles would probably still be at LSU. There likely wouldn’t be a playoff system in college.

They mention how Brees and Payton were instrumental in helping bring NOLA back after Katrina. Initially, I'd say drafting Reggie Bush brought more excitement. Brees was good, but not great in San Diego and had a very questionable injury. Payton seemed like a very meh selection as coach. I had to look it up but he was one of five candidates: The others were Jets defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson, Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon, former Green Bay head coach Mike Sherman and former St. Louis Rams coach Mike Martz.

We continue to suck until the year Alex Smith/Rodgers were drafted and we take Rodgers after 49'ers take Smith.

Saban didn’t like Thomas because Thomas was the Dolphins Alpha Male and it threatened Saban.

Saban had that reputation for being prickly at LSU but it went over better because he was dealing with kids and boosters who were just happy to be winning.

I’d heard a story from a booster about when he was at LSU and a grad student in the athletic office greeted him when he came in the building. The student was later reprimanded by someone in the athletic office and told that “when coach Saban comes in the building, he is already quite focused on his tasks for the day and speaking to him creates an unwanted distraction that he will not tolerate. You are not to speak to or make eye contact with Coach Saban”.

I always thought that was one of those urban legend stories but this booster was adamant that it was true. Who knows? But I guess when there’s smoke, there’s usually fire.

Saban has a deep love for the NFL. He always wanted to be a successful NFL coach and there’s a reason he’s never gone back after all these years. It’s because he knows he can’t scare players into doing things the way he wants and he’s incapable of coaching any other way.

That's a serious domino effect, and hard to argue against any of it. It's all speculation, of course, but not out of the realm of possibility.
