The KKK was organized by former Confederate soldiers right after the civil war. It began as a social club for veterans but quickly became a focus for violent Southern resistance to 'Radical' Reconstruction.
 
While they were started to resist carpet baggers and the like (along with intimidating blacks) the fact that their methods were violent from the onset take away their ability to be viewed in anything resembling a positive light.
