When Winston finishes with a decent, up & down statistical year and gets the team to or near playoff contention, does the FO hold off on drafting a 1st round QB until ‘24/‘26 and continue to invest in building the near future around Winston for another year through the draft by using some of the early picks (counting compensatory & Payton trade’s picks) on G, TE, & RB?
Or do we restart young at QB and invest in one of the top 6 franchise QB draft prospects with the potential Payton trade’s 1st rounder even after Winston progresses and potentially leads the team to a playoff seed this season? Assuming Payton coaches somewhere next year based on his interviews.
Young or Stroud are day 1 ready to step in under center and be missing the piece to a contending team that’s already elite at every other skill position like we have. But it probably takes the ‘23-‘26 1sts (counting the Payton trade’s ‘23 1st) and multiple 2nds & 3rds to get a top 2-3 pick. Basically all early draft capital for the next 3-4 years. Anthony Richardson and KJ Jefferson could go in the 15-25 pick range but may need some-all of ‘23 before they’re ready to start while they have a lot of upside as passers and playmaking QBs.
