When a team is wildly inconsistent, that points to one thing. Coaching. (1 Viewer)

One of the primary duties of a coach, specifically a head coach, is to keep the team focused and motivated.

We all know the cliche that the biggest game of the year is always the next one. Maintaining that attitude among the players, keeping the team on an even keel -- humble after a big win, focused after a loss -- is the coaching staff's job.

We all saw what happened last week when Sean Payton was obviously fired up and keyed in on not just a victory, but an all-out balls-to-the-wall juggernaut of a win. That attitude was reflected in the entire team. If he can get jacked up about a personal vendetta, he should be just that intense about EVERY game. That is his job.

The sad part is, Payton used to be a mastermind of motivation. He was one of the best in the business. The last few seasons, it's become increasingly and undeniably evident that that fire just isn't there any more (outside of a revenge game against Gregg Williams, which just goes to show that he still has it, but isn't putting forth the effort week in and week out.)

Enough is enough. Sean Payton has been arguably the greatest head coach in Saints history. But if he wants to continue in that role, he's going to have to dig down and find what made his leadership so great and bring it back. Otherwise, it's time to step aside.
Sorry dude but its not the head coach job to motivate any players. This is the NFL where players get paid millions of dollars and a chance every year to win the Superbowl. Not to mention the millions that some get thru endorsements from advertising products and/or services for companies, etc. Also, players don't work 8 or 9 hours a day.

If a player or players can't get up for all of those incentives then they are the problem not the head coach. It's the players.

Payton already has earn his 'skins' by taking his previous team to the playoffs many times (and I mean deep into the playoffs) and win a Superbowl.

Exactly! This is what a rebuilding team looks like....inconsistent because a lack of quality personnel and depth.

Payton is a great coach on the field. Where he has gotten himself into trouble is having too much say over personnel decisions. Loomis needs to move aside and let a new GM step in who has scouting expirience and let him have the final say and not Payton.

Loomis gets way too much credit, both good and bad. He is not in charge of day to day talent acquisition. He runs the team. The GM we got from the Dolphins that has overseen the draft the last 2 years is the guy in charge of getting talent. Yes, Payton has a large say in it, but he is not the deciding voice. The 2015 draft was old scouts, new acting GM. This year was the first draft with revamped scouts and GM. You'd be hard pressed to find fault in the last 2 years draft results

i wouldn't be surprised if an entire different coaching staff could come in and turn this team around, and win it all.

Tell that to Dallas who is 11-1 with a rookies all over.

A rookie running back and a rookie qb

Those are two significant positions but they are not "everywhere" and they are also protected by the best line the league has seen since the last Great Wall of Dallas.

Is it any wonder why we were so successful for so many years then fell off a bit when we started playing round robin with our OLine? Prescott and Elliott don't get touched. When you have that kind of protection, there is no rookie learning curve
