I've always heard "Don't drink alone" and whatnot. Clearly after a long day at work, I am allowed a beer or two to unwind, regardless of who is or isn't around.

But at what point exactly is it a problem (per the adage)? Is it a quantity issue? A type of alcohol issue?

i drink alone in the shower....you should try it some time :9:

Drinking alone is one of life's Top Ten pleasures. Had to get out of college to figure that out though.

When it's a symptom (or self-medication) of something worse. Otherwise, there's not a darn thing wrong with it.

And it doesn't matter what kind of alcohol it is. They say drinking alone is bad because it can often be a sign of depression or deep anxiety - basically, the person is in a bad place, so they get drunk, by themselves and wallow in it. That's a bad thing.

But as long as you're not doing that, there's nothing inherently wrong with drinking alone - in and of itself.

I do it from time to time. Girlfriend's out of town and I don't feel like going out? I might have a few while watching tv on a weekend night. Out of town or traveling alone? Might have a few at the airport or hotel bar.

Nothing is wrong with that whatsoever. The problem is when people drink alone to self-medicate their problems when they should be doing something else about it.

+1 Jonesy, wait until you have a kid. Some time alone in quiet house w/ a cold pint is hard to come by, and very appreciated.

I think its sad to drink alone - and I don;t mean a couple of drinks. I mean getting buzzed and drunk. So I guess it comes down to quantity for me. Plus, there is no excuse. Just walk down to your local bar.

Exactly. I was gone all the time on various deployments with my fellow Jarheads, so every time we deployed to wherever, it was the norm to go get something to eat then drink the night away. Lather, rinse, repeat. That was for 12 years of my adult life. Flash forward to the present. I'm home a good bit, the kids whine and fight and scream. I get them off to school and if my wife is at work, it's totally quiet. So why not drink a pint or 12 and enjoy myself? :hihi:

he sun is hot and that ol' clock is movin' slow
And so am I
Workday passes like molassas in wintertime
But it's July
Gettin' paid by the hour and older by the minute
My boss just pushed me over the limit
I'd like to call him somethin'
But think I'll just call it a day

Chorus:
Pour me somethin' tall and strong
Make it a hurricane before I go insane
It's only half past twelve, but I don't care
It's five o'clock somewhere

This lunch break is gonna take all afternoon
And half the night
Tomorrow morning I know there'll be hell to pay
Hey, but that's all right
I ain't had a day off now in over a year
My Jamaican vacation is gonna start right here
If the phones for me
You can tell 'em I've just sailed away

Chorus:
Pour me somethin' tall and strong
Make it a hurricane before I go insane
It's only half past twelve, but I don't care
It's five o'clock somewhere

I could pay off my tab
Pour myself in a cab and be back to work before 2
At a moment like this, I can't help but wonder
What would Jimmy Buffett do?

Jimmy Buffett spoken:
Funny you should ask, Alan
I'd say
Pour me somethin' tall and strong
Make it a hurricane before I go insane
It's only half past twelve, but I don't care

Pour me somethin' tall and strong
Make it a hurricane before I go insane
It's only half past twelve, but I don't care
He don't care
And I don't care
It's five o'clock somewhere

Jimmy: What time zone am I on?
What country am I in?

Alan: It doesn't matter

It's five o'clock somewhere

Jimmy: It's always on five in Margaritaville, come to think of it

Alan: I heard that

Jimmy: You've been there haven't you?

Alan: Yes, Sir

Jimmy: I've seen your boat there

Alan: I've been to Margaritaville a few times

Jimmy: All right.
That's good

Alan: Stumbled my way back

Jimmy: OK Just want to make sure you can keep it between the
navigational beacons

Alan: Between the bouys.
I got it

Jimmy: All right.

It's five o'clock.
Let's go somewhere

Alan: I'm ready.
Crank it up

Jimmy: Let's get out of here

Alan: I'm gone

If I'm forced to listen to Jimmy Buffet, I might have to start drinking before breakfast. Alone or not.

I am a recovering alcoholic and even in the height of my drinking days, I never could get into drinking alone. It was just boring to me. Oh well, to all his own.

If you start with Jimmy Buffett, I might just fall off the wagon!
