So we’re second-worst in the NFL in sacks behind KC. Question is why? Is Cam declining? Turner disappointing since the injury? Granderson not stepping up? Or is it something else.

Check this:

Basically, all three DEs are double teamed (or triple teamed) at an extremely high rate. Which could mean:

1. Were not blitzing much, so backs and TEs and Cs can help on the edge.

2. Our DTs aren’t doing much of anything wrt pass rush, so extra blockers can focus on our edge guys.

It’s not a stretch to say that Onyemata will take this defense from “pretty good” to elite. Whether he’s rushing from inside or from the edge like he was in preseason (so we can kick Cam inside), the interior pressure with him in the game will make it impossible for blockers to focus their attention outside anymore.

Add in Davenport (hopefully) and you can see this changing fast.

To me, our defensive line looks a lot like our receiving corp. It's a talent problem. Due to injuries, suspensions and free agency losses we have a bunch of UDFA's starting and playing lots. Onyemata suspended, Sheldon Rankings and Malcom Brown gone. Davenport hurt and Payton Turner hasn't figured it out just yet. Getting back Onyemata and Davenport should do wonders for our pass rush. We need those guys back ASAP. Heneikie had ALL DAY on Sunday. It was painful to watch. Just glad we are so good in coverage.

I was thinking about this this morning last 2 years, I think Dline rotation was one of our chief weapons
We just kept sending waves of fresh bodies at olines
When Oneymata and Davenport get back I think we’ll get back to heavy rotations

I also wonder what effect our banged up Oline has - a mix of quick strikes with short drives means D is on field a lot
I think Latt had something like 90 snaps last week

This shows our defensive ends are getting double teamed and not winning when double-teamed. Our interior pass rush is non-existent. Our DT's outside Oyenmata are below average reinforcing why none of them were drafted unless you count Tanoh Kpassagnon as a Chiefs second rounder. Davenport is our best pass rusher when healthy. Getting Oyenmata and Davenport back for the Bucs game is crucial. Our defensive line is why we beat Tampa last year, losing Hendrickson, Brown, and Rankins from that line has to be replenished. Add Oyenmata and Davenport to that and no position group on this team looks like a shell of its former self more than our 2020 d line. We basically have Jordan as the only hold over starter for the last four and a half games. No wonder we are so low in sacks. (Also notice Trey Hendrickson's name way up there on the getting double teams and yet still having successful pass rushes metric in this chart.)

Most interesting that Payton Turner, a rookie DE, is the most frequently double teamed edge player in the NFL. Thinking that probably has more to do with the defensive schemes we run than his actual ability (especially when considering Cam and Granderson are double teamed almost as much). Guess we can't get a true idea of his ability unless something changes.

So the 4 most double-teamed pass rushers in the NFL are Nick Bosa and all 3 Saints DE's. That is incredibly damning on the DT's. For that to even be possible, both DE's would have to be double teamed on the same play consistently, while he DT's get snuffed out by one blocker.

Thanks for posting this but that information was clearly evident during the games. What was also clearly evident is the officials turning a blind eye to our opponents obvious holding penalties and that has been going on for years but it's been masked by Cam's ability to play through the hold.
