I have to confess I was not completely sold on Jammal Brown when we picked him in 2005 and it seemed like some people then on Sr.com doubted the decision. But now that we have him as one of the top O-linemen in the NFL, it has to be one of the smartest NFL draft picks we ever made.

But on a general scale, where does it rank on all time Saints 1st round picks? IMHO It has to be on a high list because we did our homework and we hit a HR with the best O-lineman of that years draft. and it really helped our O-line immediately.

Agreed. When we traded up, I was certain we were going to pick Derrick Johnson. We're still searching for our LB, but I couldn't be happier with Jamaal Brown. One of the few good draft moves we've made in recent memory...or ever...

For a team that has drafted in the 1st round FB/LB Les Kelley, DT Kevin Hardy,G Larry Shinners,G Royce Smith, MLB Rick Middleton, WR Larry Burton, DE Joe Campbell, K/P Russell Erxleben, WR Linsey Scott, LB Alvin Toles, DE Shawn Knight, RB Vaughn Dunbar, LB Mark Fields, CB Alex Molden, DT Johnathan Sullivan, and gave up an entire draft plus some to draft Ricky Williams, I'd say he's a real good pick!

Longevity will be the key. Will he hold up for 10 or more years? Stan Brock, Willie Roaf, and Jim Dombrowski were all1st round picks and fixtures in the Saints OL for years. He's probably more talented than Dombrowski was, but not at Roaf's or Brock's level yet, IMO.

Best 1st round Draft Picks from the recent decade.

1. 2006 Reggie Bush
2. 2005 Jammal Brown
3. 2004 Will Smith
4. 2001 Deuce McAllister (would be higher without the injuries)
5. 2002 Charles Grant
6. 2002 Donte Stallworth
7. 2007 Robert Meachem

I lost some faith in JB last year. he had a lot of mental mistakes for coming off a pro bowl year. I hope it was a fluke.

We traded up a few spots, ahead of Carolina, who was eyeing him, and stole him from them. That's a pretty sweet deal.

Hmm, can't say that list is one I'd agree with, personally I think this magnificent 7 has a lot more going for it.

1, Archie Manning (1971)
2. Willie Roaf (1993)
3. George Rogers (1981)
4. Stan Brock (1980)
5. Will Smith (2004)
6. Wayne Martin (1989)
7. Deuce McAllister (2001)

Good list. I'd have to add Wes Chandler (1978) and Ken Burroughs (1970) to that list somewhere. Both were really, really good receivers in the league for a long time, although we traded Burroughs to the Oilers for three spares in 1971.

I can't agree that the Will Smith pick was a good one. He's a good player, but Wilfork would have helped us more. I judge the picks by who else was available.

Let me help you here.......

Best 1st round Draft Picks

EDITED BY BREEZY9

1. 2001 Deuce McAllister (injuries are recent and he's a stud, also picked late in the round)
2. 2005 Jammal Brown (the only reason he won't be a Hall of Famer is the knees)
3. 2004 Will Smith (overrated at times, but still solid)
4. 2002 Charles Grant (ahead of Reggie for the time being but he's slipping fast)
5. 2006 Reggie Bush (subtract the hype and you have a so-so pick, and since you used #2 overall on him, he's not worthy of being higher on the list)
600. 2002 Donte Stallworth (adjusted from number 6 to number 600)

HOLD ON

WAIT

WAIT FOR IT

1,545,344. 2007 Robert Meachem (the only good news is it's like having two first round picks this season, maybe he'll get to play in one play)

Don't take this as a diss on Jamal Brown but he's not even the best OT the saints have drafted much less the best in the NFL. Willie Roaf was the best OT drafted by the Saints.
