So, I went to Total Wine this weekend and picked up a bottle of Woodford Rye, Makers' 46, and Smooth Ambler: Contradiction pictured below. I've really been into Rye recently and the Woodford Rye is good, but I still probably like Bulleit Rye better. I haven't had a chance to try the Makers' 46 yet. But, I was really surprised how good the smooth Ambler: Contradiction is. I partially bought it just because I though the label was interesting, but also because I had done some research on it and it looked interesting. Smooth Ambler is a distiller in West Virginia. Contradiction is a blended Bourbon. I think it's made with a wheated bourbon that Smooth Ambler distills and blended with a high rye Bourbon from Indiana (likely MGP). Anyway, I think it's really good. It opens with honey that quickly gives way to cinnamon and then a long dry finish. It has a really good mouth feel with lots of dense flavor with a really long finish. I highly recommend this if you like rye or cinnamon.
So, I had another glass of the Smooth Ambler: Contradiction last night and it tasted totally different to me. It's really odd. Maybe it's because of what I ate each night or that I had some Woodford Rye before the Contradiction the first time, but last night I tasted very little cinnamon or spice. It was much more of a sweet cherry flavor (like Maker's Mark). It was still good, but just tasted wildly different to me.
Neck pour vs open pour... it happens to me a lot.
I finally found a bottle of Smokewagon Uncut Unfiltered and I and drinking a glass right now and smoking a Rocky Patel cigar on a very cool evening...
I haven't found a Rye I really enjoy yet, but I also haven't tried very many mid-tier ones yet and I certainly haven't tried any top-tier ones. I'm still fairly new to Bourbon and have more of those I want to try first. That being said, cinnamon is one of my favorite flavors and I've heard of some cinnamon bombs and would like to try something along those lines.
It's a good whiskey, but I don't think it lives up to the price.Stopped by the best liquor store in the area and came across a Doc Swinson's 15 year release #11 the other day. I think I'll watch some old Drew on NFL Network this afternoon and give it a try.

Also, not a big fan of the Rocky Patel last night. Good draw, but not much flavor at all. Who are the cigar smokers, here? Do we need to start a cigar thread? I still consider myself a novice.

Angels Envy Rye finished in rum casks is pretty amazing although it does cost a bit
i'm in that number, but after 25 years trying everybody, i'm set in my waysWho are the cigar smokers, here? Do we need to start a cigar thread?
I will admit that I have never had a batch of Angel"s Envy bourbon or rye that was worth the price. Im glad I tried it. It's not a bad bourbon, but it ranks kinda low in the "bang for your buck" category. I probably won't buy another bottle.I've always wanted to try the Angle's Envy Rye but I've never seen it on a shelf. Maybe I just don't look enough or I just have bad luck, but I never see any of the rare stuff like any of Pappy, E.H. Taylor, Weller, etc.
