NEW ORLEANS | A United Nations panel will decide Friday whether the U.S. government's response to Hurricane Katrina violated a treaty on racism, and its ruling could be influenced by a controversial statement from two U.N. advisers who last week labeled the planned demolition of four New Orleans public housing complexes as "discriminatory" even though neither visited the city to research the issue.

Last week's statement drew international media coverage and was hailed by opponents of a plan to replace the four housing complexes with mixed-income neighborhoods, although the plan also calls for the Department of Housing and Urban Development to retain several other public housing complexes in New Orleans. HUD also has provided vouchers through which former public housing residents can rent private apartments across the city.

The U.N. specialists now acknowledge that they haven't been to New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina and were basing their opinion largely on the views of activists who have waged an unsuccessful campaign to halt the demolitions.

Why does this not surprise me? I wonder why I should believe every activist I see and hear when their full of false information or exaggerated claims. But then their not perfect and they make mistakes too now don't they?

i said it before and will say it again ( incase anyone from the UN reads this board ) ...the buildings in the BW Cooper that are being demolished were slated for demolition and approved for demolition in 2004 due to the inhabitability (is that a word ?) I do the insurance for BW Cooper RMC and know this for a FACT. Plans were to demolish several outdated and inhabitable structures and start construction of the same buildings you see in the Fisher Development in Algiers. Currently those are the ones getting the wrecking ball.

It's great that the U.N. allows the accused to present its side of the... oh, wait.

Simple solution:

The current U.N. Building in N.Y. will be used to house those who used to live in said projects.

The U.N. will relocate to the buildings they say shouldn't be demolished in N.O.

Wait, you mean the U.N. won't agree to that?

ahh the good ole UN coming to our rescue.

My dad once had a sign prominately displayed in his front yard that read

"Get us out of the UN - NOW" Yeah it was an eye catcher for sure. I think Katrina blew it away - not sure.

****ing UN

I hate to be "that guy" but seriously, what a garbage institution it's become. It's time to League of Nations that puppy and start over from scratch.

Yeah but you mean uninhabitability (don't want to confuse the UN people reading this thread)

So, he was appealing to the National Organization for Women to get us out of the United Nations. Hmm.

Look up the history of the UN building. They anticipate shutting the whole thing down for three years.

It was built in the 1950s and parts of it are falling apart while everybody argues over who's going to pick up the tab to fix it. Estimated cost to repair? $1.8 BILLION.

Everybody seems to assume that the U.S. will pay for it all...eventually.

REPAIRS WOULD EMPTY THE UN

The current UN headquarters is over crowded, over used, doesn't meet fire codes and is chock full of 1950s style asbestos insulation.

Originally designed to serve 75 member countries and 700 conferences a year, the current campus serves 192 countries and is the site for 8,000 meetings a year. In addition, the facility is not in compliance with modern fire and safety codes (though it is technically exempt from those codes) and has asbestos insulation throughout the building.
