I was in Subway yesterday and the person in front of me ordered 2 subs, one Italian and one chicken something

He asked that the sandwiches be marked before they were bagged up

The employee marked one of the subs

The customer insists that both be marked (not full on rudely but definitely not politely)

Instead of just doing it the employee argued that he just needs to do one. If one is marked Italian the other sub must be the other sub (he has a point)

The customer gets angry and they have a full on argument that goes back and forth for way too long.

Finally the employee just marks the 2nd sub and shoves it in the bag

Who do you agree with more?

Logically I'm on the employee's side but I'd just take the split second to mark the second sub, not worth the hassle, not worth even commenting on either

If you can mark one sub, you can mark both. Customer asks you to do it, you do it. End of story.

Employee's just arguing to be right ..... because? There is .... well, WAS ... LITERALLY no "right" or "wrong". It's not even a "the customer is always right" issue. "Can you mark both subs?" "Sure".

While the employee is right, only one needs to be marked to identify the sandwiches, you dont make a customer feel dumb by arguing the necessity.

Mark the sandwich and move on. If you don't want to deal with dumb people, get a job where you don't deal with the public.

It was later in the evening.

What's no big deal at the beginning of the shift "just mark the subs" by the end of a long shirtty shift of dealing with mean, impatient, rude customers by the end of the day turns into "I will die on this hill"

^^ This ^^

The customer doesn't need to explain to you why they want both subs marked. They just want both subs marked. The subs could be for someone else. It isn't your business. So you thought just one needed to be marked. They asked for both. Do it. There is no need to argue with them unless they are trying to get something free for nothing. I run a restaurant.... I will be firing that employee.

That was my thought, that perhaps the subs were going to 2 different places. But who cares. What if it's THREE different subs? Gonna be marking at least 2 then, right? Employee is 100 % wrong and new store policy is every sub gets marked.

He was trying to get free ink.

Burrito at Chiptole would be a better option.

Customer can just go to Quiznos next time, if he doesn't like the service at Subway?!?! Plus, Subway makes nasty sandwiches. I don't know how you can mess up a sandwich, but Subway sandwiches are barely edible, compared to home made.

How about making better bread at Subway? Let's start there.
