Why are CD's 720MB? (1 Viewer)

Honestly, not that important.

Just a QnA for Customer Service week and I could win a prize... no biggie.
 
well, they are usually 700mb/80mins (you can squeeze out 720 with overburn on a 700). 720 is an odd size for cd, though they do make them.

originally it had something to do with trying to keep the disc size/capacity (74minute/650mb) close to that of cassette tapes, which is what they were originally created for to replace. for the etching technology used on CDs, you'd have to make a bigger disc for any more data. they go up to 99mins, which is 870mb, but they aren't that common. some players won't read a cd bigger than 700mb.
