well, they are usually 700mb/80mins (you can squeeze out 720 with overburn on a 700). 720 is an odd size for cd, though they do make them.

originally it had something to do with trying to keep the disc size/capacity (74minute/650mb) close to that of cassette tapes, which is what they were originally created for to replace. for the etching technology used on CDs, you'd have to make a bigger disc for any more data. they go up to 99mins, which is 870mb, but they aren't that common. some players won't read a cd bigger than 700mb.

Ohga insisted that the CD be designed to be 12 centimeters (4.8 inches) in diameter so that it could hold 75 minutes worth of music. It was necessary for the CD to support 75 minutes of playback in order for it to be able to hold the entirety of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
