I never really thought about it all that much until my most recent NOLA return for halloween, but Canal Street is really terrible. Its probably the most important street in the city in terms of geography and accessibility. It's where the streetcar hits the quarter, it has parades, its near the dome and borders the CBD, it has our one casino on it, it has the ferry station, and every single visitor to the city will be on it at some point. But other than the hotels, its nothing but crappy souvenir shops and shoe stores. Why in God's name is the building at the corner of CANAL and BOURBON, possibly New Orleans' two best known streets, a FOOT LOCKER? Why are there absolutely no bars on Canal? Why are your only options for food during a parade McDonald's and Popeye's? Why is your only option for booze to grab a 22oz out of a cooler at a luggage store?

It has so much potential, why is it so freaking terrible? The more I think about it the more absurd it is. There must be some kind of ordinance against bars on it at least, right? If not, I'm going to open one.

the downtown development folks are working on that...It is actually better than it was a few years ago, believe it or not.
I agree, though...it needs work. With the reopening of the saenger, the (hopefully) closing/reworking of the iberville projects, and the development of the medical district, it should be drastically improved over the next 5 years.

Credit the Brennan family for running a successful restaurant on Canal for several years now, Palace Cafe. But I do agree as the available merchants leave a lot to be desired.

Nagin wanted to turn it into the US version of Monte Carlo after Katrina...

IMO if they put another Casino at N Rampart and Canal it would help

It's so bad at that end bc people rarely go that way

Also, high end shops would work. But why would anyone open something there?

I did notice a new condo project across from Palace Cafe

cool. Will you have off-street parking?

It's been going downhill for decades leading up to Katrina, but as someone who remembers is 30-35 years ago and who comes in 10 times per year and has for years, I think it's gotten better post Katrina. Condos are opening closer to the interstate and there's been a few restoration/remodels started. The theater should help, but I'd bet in 5 years we won't recognize it.

The Saenger is going to reopen, and they have put condos into the old Krauss building.

Two problems with that particular intersection - its proximity to the Iberville projects and the fact that it's an RTA hub, which causes commuter business (fast food, etc) to do well there.

But like BigOdin said, they are making strides along Canal - Harrah's, Palace Cafe, Ritz-Carlton, Crowne Plaza, Mariott, Sheraton, JW Mariott, Lowe's, Cafe Giovanni, Adler's, etc

I think the largest help will be if WE make a conscious effort to patronize whatever is on Canal and support them. Even foot traffic

Eg - instead of Adlers at Oakwood, Adlers at Canal

Are there any plans right now to get rid of/rework the Iberville projects. I thought Landrieu had (for good reason) not discussed any ideas he may have for that space. I also thought he may put off touching it until he was re-elected. Have any plans come to light?

that was my point about parking.

Unless you plan on making a day of it, trying to find a place to park close to your destination on Canal is daunting. Especially for those not familiar with it ( one way streets, pricing etc ). People arent going to drive an additional 10-15 miles, spend 20 min to find parking that will cost $14 to spend $3000 on a tennis bracelet from Adlers or sip coffee at a sidewalk table in the afternoon.

With the amount of hotels that line Canal St., it only makes sense that you have these " electronic/novely/gift" shops that line the street.

As for foot locker....excellent site. They catch every young, low-wage earner that gets paid by thier employer ( usually a hotel ) and buys the newest shoe. I know since I worked at Foot Locker in 1993-95 at Oakwood and several times on Canal St.. ( when they needed additional people for busy weekends )

I think all of the housing developments are getting renovated from ground up. I dont know where they are in terms of the list.

welp...nevermind. They are the only one not getting the mak-over....

True. Not that long ago, there was an adult movie theater smack dab in the middle of Canal Street downtown. So there has been some progress.
