There are definitely spots in west Texas that are great for solitude.. I especially love Big Bend.

Yep, but being from the rain forest of SETX, I need a little more water and vegetation to reground, so my quick getaway is in the Texas Hill Country not far from a place called Utopia:

My dog, posing ever so politely, on Lake Havasu. (This spot is roughly 10 miles or so from my house.)

Been there, or very near there, and it was beautiful especially along the deceptively cold river. The place where we stopped looked so much like your photo that I knew where you were before reading your location. It was over 100 degrees that day, the rocks burned our feet, but jumping into the oh so inviting river was like diving into an ice bath.

I'll second Oak Mountain...especially in the Fall. Go to the top and this is the view.

When I pull out of my house, I can see both the Chocoloco Mountains and the Talladega Mountains behind them. I then drive by Blue Mountain and Coldwater Mountain before crossing over Mt. Royal and past Skeleton Mountain. The hills look like they're on fire from the 2nd week of October to the 2nd week of November.

Dude, I was about to post a pic of Utopia but I couldn't find a good one. I used to have a 1,200 acre ranch out there. Family sold that one and got one in Leakey, Texas.

Love that place with its CCC motif and wide assortment of what a friend from Lake Charles refers to as "ploppass" (places to plop your *** down).

During the summer, when it hits 110-120, the river/lake is perfect. When we were down there when this pic was taken (last weekend) it was probably 106 and the water was perfect. But once it starts hitting around the 100 mark, the water really cools off. It also depends on if you are on the lake area, or the river. Anywhere up-river is ALWAYS cold. Once it opens up into Lake Havasu, the water slows down and it warms up a lot. This cove is called Steamboat Cove and because it's on the lake and in a cove, the water has time to warm up.
