Winston is the key to a Super Bowl run this year (1 Viewer)

Don't forget it's not a coincidence that Winston's worst season for interceptions came under Arians and was a byproduct of Arians' goofy offensive system. Even Brady struggled with INTs under Arians's system until he essentially changed Tampa's offense to the Tom Brady scheme. Jameis is not going to throw a bunch of picks this year. If he can stay healthy, he's going to have a very good year with the weapons he now has to throw to.

That's the thing people got to understand. All these acquisitions and draft picks are qreat and exciting and all but people forget about Winston and how it is important overall that he need to play well first.
No doubt, so Jameis goes, so goes the team.

We know he can fling it, but he has yet to prove he can take advantage of precision timing routes. Brees and Mike were unstoppable. If the DB got caught leaning 1 way, both Brees and Mike instantly knew the ball was going the other way. Their play was as high in precision as a circus act or a ballet. Jameis surely knows the value of a player like Mike and is working on it.

A lot of people on this forum were hyping Winston’s potential and pushing back against those, like me, who had doubts about his being “the future.” Well, the Winston fans got their wish. He’s our man. Maybe what the OP is trying to say is, I hope the Winston fans were right.

It was one thing when it looked like the Saints would be in full rebuilding mode for the next few years. There would be time to see if JW would be what we need. But now, with all this new talent, the time is now. It’s on! I love it. I hope DA turns him loose and lets Winston take chances and learn from them and build confidence.

I took it to mean he has confidence the team is good enough to win, if Jameis holds up his end.

Biggest keys for me….

Number one: the offensive line. It was horrible last year both pass blocking and run blocking. If that doesnt improve we are at best a one and done playoff team.
Number two: Cam Jordan playing at the highest level and also getting an added boost to our pass rush from our first round pick last year.
Number 3: Winston and Michael Thomas developing chemistry.

The signings won’t really make a difference if these three things don't happen.

Well....no duh!!!! JW's play and overall team health are the keys to the season....

He missed on a couple of draft choices but he reinvigorated Teddy. He never had to draft a qb high with Brees. It will be interesting to see how he does with another team. Did Sean make Brees or vice versa?
I believe our total draft investment in QBs since Payton has been here has been two 3rd rounders two 7th rounders. Plus, we've signed a handful of projects and FAs trying to revive their careers. I think people are downplaying Payton's ability to coach QBs, but much of it is probably to do with Taysom not working out, which I can sort of get. Taysom was really been the only one that Payton seemed adamant about, but even then, he started Winston after it was clear that Taysom wasn't the answer.

As for your question, was it Payton or Brees, it was both. Perfect timing for both.

Imagine if the defense can force turnovers at the rate they did last season and Jameis be at least at a 1:1 big play/turnover ratio. This would be the perfect scenario to play out.

The worst case scenario is if the defense can’t force turnovers at a high rate and Winston consistently turns the ball over. The most likely scenario is one or the other occurs.

I would say the key to the Superbowl is really the offensive line. Last year, even with a lack of weapons and playing 4 qbs, it was the oline failure that was troublesome for the offense. I trust JW and the skilled positions. The biggest question is can the Oline perform up to their old standard and stay away from injury. If they do, this will be a really fun 20 game year.

The one thing I don’t like is DA anointing Winston the starter without competition. It reminds me of the Haslett/Brooks days. Haslett was scared to bruise Brooks ego and even cut Delhomme when he felt threatened. Guys need to win their role.
Dalton has already seen his best days and is accepting of a backup role at this stage of his career and Jameis played well enough last year, especially considering he had no one to throw the ball to, to deserve the opportunity to receive all the starter's reps in training camp this year and the be the guy heading into this season.

Jameis knows he still has everything to prove beyond that. If he falters and disappoints then I'm sure they'd be willing to move to Dalton, but it's in this team's best interest for winning now to go ahead and let Jameis have the reins and see where it goes.

But Winston already won it last year. He just got injured and we re-signed him to be our starter.

Yeah, but you also said that Winston was going to be Ian Book's backup and this is month five of me waiting for your exhaustive list of free agent QBs who are better than Winston.

On paper the saints have reloaded with amazing talent and addressed our weaknesses with potential future stars.

If Winston can pick up where he left off last year and not force balls into traffic we can be as good as we’ve ever been. I’m really excited about this year, more so than last year.
100% agree. We go as far as Jameis takes us. My only real concern is the OL. We have Peat back from injury, an inconsistent Ruiz, no Armstead, & either a rookie in Penning or a journeyman in Hurst manning the blindside. Even back in his Tampa days, i noticed that Jameis tends to hold on to ball a tick or two longer.

Hope the OL comes together & gels asap, &/or Jameis quickens his progressions & gets the ball out faster moving forward. I mean, this team is the most complete team we’ve had in years. We have the makings on an insanely explosive O, & a championship quality D locking down the other side of the ball.

This is the team DA & Co. have built. As much as i cherish & hold dear the memories of the Drew Brees & Sean Payton teams, i would absolutely LOVE to see the new regime succeed & usher in a new era of Saints football.

I think Jameis is key but really a huge key is Dennis Allen. I see sportsbooks at 7.5 or 8 wins. With the talent on this team, some are scratching their head (including me). The biggest insight I found was this article:

TLDR: It's rare for a HC in the first year of his second stint to have success

I think this situation is unique though (so much carryover) and gives Allen a better chance to succeed than normal. Of course, Jameis is a huge part of that but Allen also has to beat the odds and earn back those 2 wins bookmakers are probably taking away from the team.
