Would You Overpay for Suh? (1 Viewer)

He's visiting the Bucs tomorrow, so it may end up being a moot point what the Saints fans have him pegged at.

Alex Okafor had a very good first season with the New Orleans Saints after joining the team as a free agent last offseason, and now the veteran defensive end faces the free agency period hoping he can repeat that success with the same team again in 2018. Okafor signed a one-year deal with the Saints last March hoping to fill a role as one-half of a pass rushing duo with Cameron Jordan, and in his first 10 games with the team racked up 43 tackles, broke up four passes, forced two fumbles, added five tackles for a loss, and recorded 4.5 sacks.

Then, in his 10th game, Okafor tore his Achilles tendon, ending that run of success.

“I want to be back here,” he said after the injury of his future plans for next season. “I was having a great year before I got hurt, and I just want to continue that.”

How much Okafor’s agent believes he’s worth may influence whether or not he can continue that, and with the offseason officially underway, we can take a look at what the 26-year-old could command on the open market.

According to Spotrac, Okafor is worth an annual salary of $9.4 million, payable as part of a four-year contract worth $37.791 million, an amount that would make him the sixth-highest paid defensive end in football, behind Houston’s J.J. Watt.

We signed him to a 1 year 2M contract last year, 9.4M seems way too much. He had a very good 10 games but injuries are a concern... I'm not expert but I'd say 5M max per year would be more reasonable

The key to this question is the word "overpay". That is very different than asking if we should pay top market value, or "pay a lot".

Who's visiting the Bucs tomorrow?

Tomorrow (Friday) he'll be in New Orleans with us.

After that, I don't really care where he goes. I won't consider us as able to get him, to be quite honest.

oh... ya'll didn't notice the "Suh Thread CXXIV" had turned in to "Okafor Thread LXII" ? :D

12 to 15 million a year for Suh for 2 years with about half guaranteed is fine by me. For a DT, he can have a Cam Jordan-like factor on games. He would make our run stop and pass rush much better than it is. Rankins and Onyemata will be coming into their prime very soon, so add them to the gumbo. Davison, who is playing at a very high level himself, would round out one of the sickest interior D-lines in football.

After that, if we can re-sign Okafor, then our D-line will be in the same conversation as Minny and Philly. They had world class D-lines last year and they're making them even stronger this year. Keeping up with the Jones' and all that. Some folks want to horde cap space, be frugal, and and hope a 2nd or 3rd tier player falls in our laps and then has a miraculous season. All I can say is it's going to be extremely hard to compete with the other contenders in the NFC if we don't add some big guns. Big guns cost a lot of money.

And Free agency is drying up. It's either pay Suh and a DE, or keep playing moneyball and enjoy struggling to win the NFC South and hoping for "any given Sunday" to get us through the playoffs.

Suh isn't nearly as athletic as he once was.

I’ve watched every one of his games down here in south Florida and I don’t agree with this at all.

Edit: here’s a good write up. If he doesn’t look as athletic, it may be because he’s become much more disciplined against the run and is playing more technique football. His slight decrease in pressures this season also coincided with teams playing with big leads against Miami and being in fewer passing situations.

No, We have the foundation of a winner without Drew. We have a strong D and a insanely talented RB and WR that will both need to be paid in a few years. We need these key parts of are team to stay intact when Drew is gone because its highly unlikely the next guy will be on Drew's level. We can win without Suh.

If Suh costs us 15 million a season (which I think is under what he's going to get) Suh would cost us as much as two Cam Jordans... He might be good but he isn't that good.
