Its obvious that we pretty much need a complete retooling of our defense save for 3 or 4 players (Will Smith, Charles Grant, Scott Fujita, and Mike McKenzie). We need a DT, 2 new LBs, at least 2 new corners, and a FS. With so many upgrades needed, wouldn't this be a perfect time to change to more of a cover-2 or whatever defense would best fit our personnel?

You can do it in one of two ways.

1. Get the best players you can and fit a scheme around them.
2. Decide on a scheme first, then get players who fit it.

Me, I'm in favor of method #2. The more successful teams seem to do it that way. Develop an overall philosophy, then find the guys who can best execute it.

I agree with number 2 also. Fortunately for the Saints, the 2 best players on this defense are the DEs and the other is one of the corners, and they'd fit into any scheme.

I wouldn't mind seeing the D scheme changed to more cover-2 or another zone coverage. It should upgrade a weak Jason David and older possibly slower Mckenzie. Iwouldn't want them to abandon man to man totally though.

I agree 100% and been saying this for weeks. I'm hoping that Payton is taking look at the players as well as the coaching staff. Out of 11 positions, we are solid at THREE (2 DE, 1 LB). While we do have MM, we still have no idea when he will be 100% and able to return to the field. From what we have for stars, we are stuck in a 4-3 scheme, because our DE's aren't built for the 3-4. We're too weak at LB to move there and would need a serious jolt in acquiring that talent.

It's kind of the hole in the bucket theory and hopefully Payton is listing to the scouts about who is available and better yet....we can actually sign for FA's and the draft. This is not the time to think three years down the road, but to make an immediate impact and a run for the SB. The way the NFC is, there is not much difference between a 6-10 team and a 10-6 team ;) We have the offense and I'm sure Payton is sitting with Loomis trying to figure out what money we have to play with and spend about 70% of it on defense. I thnk the other 30% will go to re-signing Colston, Stecker, PT, a few Olinemen and a TE.

With that said, can our current roster of DB play a cover 2 with success? I know we play a version of it on certain downs, but does anyone know the success rate we've had with it? J David (Who has no business being on the roster in my opinion) was successful in it....but I think a lot of that had to do with Sanders and his play....we have Bullocks and KK...big drop off in talent there. So, could we play a 4-3 and cover two? I honestly don't know how the conversion would work and better yet....if we could acquire the talent to make it successful. Of course...there is no way we could be any worse than we were last year.

I just see a lot of teams in the NFC getting better and don't want to be passed by.

Well the cover 2 is generally out of the 4-3. Thing is our ends would need to be a little quicker to the Qb and our Dt's would have to better pass rushers than they are. The 4-3 also relies heavily on your Lbers being versatile enough to stop the run that your lineman miss on the way to the qb while being able to drop into coverage effectively.

I disagree. Grant I could see as a DE in a 3-4, a 3-tech in a 4-3 or his current position. Smith is a classic 4-3 DE, pass-rushing specialist. I don't see him fitting in in a 3-4. He's not right to play DE and he's not the right build for OLB. I'd be thrilled to be proven wrong, though. The 3-4 is run by some of the league's top defenses.

If Smith lost weight he could play the OLB position in a 3-4 commonly filled by a hybrid. He has good speed.

We have zero linebackers for a 3-4. Smith might transition well to a olb and he might not, but why would he want to?

Defensive end = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Olb = $

I'm also suspect that our d-coordinator can be creative enough to run a 3-4.

I think that we have 5 [;ayers that are worth something.

I would love to see the Saints either move to a cover 2 type system that creates turnovers and allows your offense multiple oppurtunities to score.

or for the Saints to grab some better LBs and run a defense similar to the old ravens and more recently the raiders where huge DTs allow LBs to mkae a lot if of plays.

1. Will Smith
2. Charles Grant
3. Fujita
4. McKenzie
5. Roman Harper

I think that this would be the perfect time to move MM and KK to S and play cover two. Craft and Young could play CB. Obviously we need at least one CB but that would be the best move for us IMO

i hate to say this , but think the scheme will stay the same and they will draft players to fill the holes.

What scheme?

Not being a PITA, but I didn't see much of a scheme this year other than leaving our pitiful secondary in man-to-man while the front seven played the run almost exclusively. "Stop the run and hope the QB sucks." Is that a scheme?

I'd like a defensive scheme that can stop the other team on 3rd and 26.
I'd like a defensive scheme that can sack the opposing quarterback once in a while without blitzing.
I'd like a defensive scheme that didn't allow quarterbacks with little or no experience to pass for 340 yards.
I'd lke a defensive scheme that occasionally produces a turnover.
