In the spring of 2004, while holding the top pick in the NFL draft, Smith was rejected by the obvious first choice: quarterback Eli Manning. This happened when Smith called to inquire about the quarterback's interest in being selected first. Someone in Manning's party -- which included his agent, Tom Condon; his father, Archie, a former star with the New Orleans Saints; and brother Peyton, quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts -- told Smith, "Don't consider us."
Two years later, Smith has not forgotten this command. Even with his team having clinched the AFC West Division title and with three of the players ultimately acquired from the New York Giants in exchange for Manning headed to the Pro Bowl, Smith still acts as if he had been run over by the entire Manning family.
He repeats those words "don't consider us," in a gravelly voice, then shakes his head.

Just let go and enjoy the playoff trip, dude.

Doth protest too much, I think.

I would never let it go. I would laugh about it gleefully every time the Giants collapsed, the Colts choked and my team won.

AJ is no friend of mine. But his loss has been our gain. I want to win the Superbowl 1st but to do it against the Chargers would be so sweet and heaven knows Drew deserves it. If I were AJ I would be more concerned about the future than carrying this grudge. Seems pointless to me.

Lets see... Eli Manning or Philip Rivers/Shawne Merriman/Nate Kaeding

I think the Charges got the much better deal on this one. Even if Rivers is only an average QB, Eli is below average.

Sorry, crosswatt -- Archie Manning may be one of our own, but he was very, very wrong to get involved in the 2004 Draft like that. Can't fault A.J. Smith at all for holding the grudge.

I would'nt let it go. The Mannings manipulated the draft.

More like Smith manipulated the draft. Smith wanted Rivers all along. But he knew that the Giants wanted Manning. It was played perfectly by Smith.

Chargers got:
Phillip Rivers
Nate Kaeding
Shawn Merrinman

Giants got:
Eli

If I were Smith, I would be loving Eli right now :)

I agree with most of you guys if I'm Smith I'm doing backflips and sending christmas cards to the Mannings right now. Hmmm I can have Eli Manning OR I can have 3 Pro Bowlers. Lets see...think think think...He shouldn't be bitter he should be elated! Also lets pray there is never a New York Giants vs San Diego superbowl, we'd never hear the end of this crap!

I think this is the case as well.

If Smith is too blinded by his own ego to recognize his incredible good fortune, than he needs a real good wake up call. Like being defeated in the SuperBowl by the underdog SAINTS!!!!

AJ Smith is cool. He got exactly what he wanted in that draft, and he gets to take periodic cheap shots at the Mannings to boot. Imagine how he'll gloat in two years or so when the Giants trade Eli for a mid-late round pick to a desperate team willing to take a flyer on a Manning name.

Say what you want about the man, but he's no fool.

Hindsights 20/20. Smith had no idea how any of this would play out. He's lucky and now wants to gloat. Thats being smug and arrogant for no good reason, and there never is one to begin with.

So what if Manning didn't want to play there. Smith knew nothing of the future or how this played out yet he wants to hold court like he is a genius and can foretell the future.

GPS Smith. You will rue the day you acted this way.
