N/S Wow. Butker kicks 77 yard field goal. Empty field. (PFT Article) (1 Viewer)

Someone’s getting drug tested their first day back at the facility... ?

Only way something like that would ever be attempted in a game that counts is on the final play before halftime. And probably not even then, since the kick could be blocked and returned for a TD by the defending team.

before this happened, I had been watching an analytic of why a 90 yard field goal is almost impossible but might be achievable and Butker was part to the presentation.

Nick Rose booted an 80 yarder in practice as a Longhorn (2015).

I mean, I guess that could put a fair catch free kick option on the table for them in the future.

It’s a trajectory thing. If the snap was a few yards longer then the defense line would be further away then the kicker could kick it Lower and farther. Not sure if there’s a rule prohibiting this from happening.

I'd like to see a video of the kick. Did he do it with a three step drop back, or did he do it like on a kick off, with seven steps..?

Makes all the difference in the world.
