It shouldn't be a big deal but with a large number of people unable to afford healthcare, and the anti vax crowd growing there's a small chance that this could be interesting.

Fatalities now up to 17, and 470 cases.

Nothing like tripling the body count overnight. The pace of this one is worrisome. Question is, is the virus spreading that quickly or is Chinese data playing catch up?

The number of actual infections will be low. How many people go to the doctor every time that they become ill?

I think it’s more a function of time - pneumonia doesn’t kill right away, takes time. And the increase total case number is expected as the virus is by no means contained and is spreading P2P, but also it takes time to confirm a suspected case. So these “new” cases are just as likely to be existing patients that are now confirmed as they are to be new patients.

The total number is still well below what the models say it should be so expect to continue to see large lots added to the count.

It depends on the symptoms. Apparently this one is a nasty pneumonia that fills the lungs with fluid. A 32-year old UK National backpacking in Thailand (presumably fit person) was “at death’s door” according to his father. He has since improved.

I think a significant majority of people experiencing those symptoms will seek care at some point. But some might not actually get to that point, so yeah, not everyone infected will become a confirmed case.

It's crazy to imagine but the stuff in the outbreak movies is pretty much how it happens. Authorities in China have established quarantine camps where those who were in close contact with infected people are effectively arrested and taken to quarantine.

Right now, authorities are trying to locate a family that left China for the Philippines - but the father stayed behind with illness. Now that it has been confirmed to be 2019-nCoV, they are trying to quarantine the rest of the family. At this time there are no confirmed cases in Philippines but there are suspected cases.

Case count now up to 552.

They're going to a "complete travel ban" in and out of Wuhan.

Officials in Wuhan announced a complete travel ban on its residents amid a coronavirus outbreak that has killed 17 people and infected more than 550 others throughout China, state media outlet CCTV said on Wednesday.

The ban, which was issued by the outbreak command authority in Wuhan, the epicentre of the virus, said that from 10am on Thursday, urban buses, subways, ferries and long-distance passenger transport would be suspended in the city.

Flights and trains departing from Wuhan will also be temporarily suspended. The notice did not say when the services would resume. The notice did not mention private cars but said “citizens should not leave the city unless there are special conditions”.

Another aspect of the time issue is the virus's latency period - I have read doctors believe it can be anywhere from two days to two weeks, as a preliminary observation.

There is a US patent for this virus.
Coronavirus is a family of viruses. The Wuhan virus is classified as novel, which means it has never been seen before - there's certainly no existing patent on it. Also, you can't patent a naturally occurring product/substance. This patent appears to be of a process used to attenuate the virus for vaccination purposes.

In other news, early results suggest the Wuhan virus (2019-nCoV) came from snakes. Note that SARS and MERS are believed to have come from bats (though MERS has also been found in camels).

if im reading that correct, the patent is on the gene-altered form of coronaviruses that can be used in other therapies

China appears to be attempting a quarantine of a city of 11 million people. It might be the largest quarantine in history?
