X-Com 2 (1 Viewer)

FYI EU and EW are on console (PS3, XB 360)

Just get EW though. EW was more of a mod with added content, than DLC.

Yes, played through them both on console. :9:

Both were also available for Mac via Steam, although I don't know if they had mod support for the "Long War" mod. My Mac could barely run them, so I never got to try that mod. It seemed a bit more akin to the old games' management (although without the old overhead gridded view!).

Of all the games that would get me to buy a gaming rig (alongside Total War: Warhammer) XCOM 2 would be the one. Maybe time to trade all these consoles in and just go PC master race, eh?

The app version of XCOM was also surprisingly solid.

Either this game is really hard or I am terrible at it (probably that). I am getting slaughtered in the first two missions.

I'm used to playing xcom pretty methodically, but with these timed missions, you really can't do that. You have to run your soldiers into fire and watch them get annihilated.

Great game so far though.

Sounds awful.

I put mine in the download queue this morning before I left for work, so have not tried it yet. Been reading reviews though (and your confirming) they put a sense of urgency in the missions not seen before. X com EW tried to do a bit with the M.E.L.D. addition, but this is on a much more extreme level. Gone is the slower one move/overwatch approach.

Can't wait for 4 o'clock!

It requires a certain amount of cognitive ingenuity. Have you finished your Encyclopedia Brown books yet?

It's a video game, not rocket science.

It's probably being cheesed by thousands of 12 year olds as we speak.

As my MacBook Protato cannot play this I am looking to finally "upgrade" (i.e. Apple speak for "buy a new Mac"); are the horrors (in online forums) about this game not being well optimized true? Are any of you guys having problems running it?

Forums are, of course, filled with the shrill voices of the discontented and not always an accurate depictor of true experience. But we all know the F9 is immune to untruth, though.

Initial thoughts on XCom2.

1) So far the game is much more difficult than Enemy Unknown.
2) The xcom games continue to have cover/line of sight issues. I continually get shot from angles that mathematically make no sense.
3) Vipers can pull you through walls. Lets see if they patch that.
4) Only in xcom can you miss 5 straight 97% shots.
5) With all that said, if you liked the previous games, you'll like this one.

Love this game!

I played Xcom alot and was wondering what they could do to make it fresh and interesting. They acheived what I was looking for, and then some.

First the new classes. Rangers close quarter ability works very well and its added a great dynamic to the game. You could tell the previous xcom tried to have the assault class be more of a close range fighter. But using the primary weapon for all attacks made the character feel like it was missing something. The melee attack for the rangers really gives them a unique feel.

I also like what the did with the support class, the new specialist with drone has a nice feel to it, and also give the character a certain uniqueness. I felt like prior xcom the support character was just a guy that could carry alot of medpacs. The drone to heal/hack/attack is a nice feature to add a little something to the class.

They did a great job making the classes each have a unique feel and play style to them. I think that will be a key component to this game, and the DLC due out in the spring will have 3 additional classes. I think the character uniqueness will add to the longevity of the title.

The way the have made the map in this game, and interacting with the multiple things going on at any given time, is also well done. Gives you a little more freedom, and choice what types of missions you can do if you have a preferance. Also allows you to kind of find what your looking for, need supplies, or a scientist/engineer, some new recruits or veteran soilders you can generally find a mission that will reward it so your not at the random draw mercy you would be in the past. Granted it does start out kind of random, but once you start playing and opening new resistance cells the map has alot going on, you'll find what you need.

I also like what they done with the engineers, and assigning them to tasks individually. In Xcom stuff is just level capped.. you need 35 engineers to build that, or unlock that. 50 to unlock that, etc. Engineers are named, and you task them, you control what gets built, and at what rate of speed. If you need something done priority you can assign multiple engineers and rush production.

As far as the game goes... I agree with those saying its hard. Or maybe i'm just not good either. I got used to a certain slow paced one move overwatch style of play. This game does not allow you to do that on every mission, There are a lot of mission with x amount of turns to complete and you have to make sacrafice. To put it into context last playthrough in Xcom, I beat the game in ironman mode with all continents, and only 3 KIA's.

I am starting my 2nd playthrough in XCOM2 because I was just completely wiped out, only 6 soliders left, 4 of them wounded, no supplies, beaten into submission, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Going back for 2nds!

I pretty much agree with all of that ^^^.

I've found I'm saving before missions now, and as soon as I finish them with an acceptible attrition rate. I seem to recall doing that a lot with the original xcom.

Right now, all my best soldiers are gravely wounded, but they're alive, so I'm marching forward.

Alright, now with a few more sessions under my belt:

1) If the whole point of concealment is to set up ambushes, why can't all my soldiers shoot at once, outside of overwatch use and one person firing? Or am I missing something?
2) The guys with the stun sticks. Talk about OP. They can move the entire length of the board and still attack...and if they hit, they have the chance of knocking the player out for the remainder of the event.
3) Again the guys with the stun sticks, like the Vipers, don't mind that there's a wall there, just stab right through it and hit me. Come on, coding a wall can't be that hard.
4) Number round missions suck. The end. Not much else to say about that.
5) With all that said, I'm still goin back churning away like an addict.

I really thought I was making some good progress in this game, and then, boom, retaliation mission. My introduction to Mutons - 2 of them. And on the same mission, I figured out how to use the skulljack, and that had some unexpected consequences. Totally wiped the squad. This game doesn't really get easier.

I also learned that I am apparently a savescummer. But I don't see any other way to play this without starting over a million times. Even a decent strategy is subject to the whims of RNG, and eventually it will get you (especially when you are missing with 87% slashes). I've gotten into point-blank firefights with my sniper (against those damn stun aliens who can run all the way across the map in one turn).

This article talks about how it can get overwhelming with too much to do, and my map has a ton of stuff going on, but the game is still very fun. I just have no idea if I'm even near the correct path to getting to victory. That avatar clock seems to be moving awfully fast (and I was able to push it back 2 weeks).

Still, this is some awesome hot garbage.
