As far as "the narrative," whether this particular situation turns out to be a hate crime or not, we shouldn't be surprised when ginned-up hysteria linking the LBGTQ community to pedophilia and "grooming" occasionally has the effect of encouraging violence.

So killing 5 people and injuring several more wasn't enough to get them the maximum sentance?

hate crimes make it a federal offense instead of simply a state criminal prosecution. That way if the jury doesn't return the correct verdict, the suspect can be re-tried in federal court without violating their constitutional right against double jeopardy.

Penalty for a federal hate crime conviction is typically 10 years.
Colorado penalty for murder is life in prison.

So yes, the penalty for murder is still greater than the penalty for a hate crime...for now at least.
