In no particular order, I can only come up with a top 5. The difference between #5 and 6 and 7 is so distinct, it's not fair to the top 5 to include them here.
George Carlin - He makes you laugh and think at the same time.
Eddie Murphy - At the time, I had never heard anything so...so..raw. It was insane, I don't know if it's just time or having heard it so often but his stand up, while still funny isn't nearly as funny as it was to me.
Richard Pryor - Made you laugh so hard you cried. Or was it that he made you laugh at situations that should really make you cry. He made jokes about race, poverty, and his own demons that made you laugh at things that should have made you really uncomfortable. Truly a gift.
Louis C K - His specials make me laugh so hard it hurts. I especially like him because my wife finds him funny too. Probably my favorite comedian right now.
Chris Rock - I don't think Rock gets as much credit as he should for his commentary. He's has some social one liners that continue to be both funny and relevant.
