The preseason makes it almost impossible to predict what type of team you have. There are rampant stories of teams who were successful in the preseason and went on to have abysmal years. One year ago, the Cleveland Browns went 4-0 (including a win vs. the Saints) before completing the second 0-16 recording NFL history.

As a player, it almost felt like a team could choose to win or not to win before a game, depending on how much their coaching staff wanted to install to give them a chance. So often, teams need to get different things out of a preseason. One team might have a new staff, a group that needs to build confidence in what they are teaching, confirm validity. That staff may put a nice game plan together, add some new wrinkles, and outwit an opposing team. Some may have a team with high expectations, that need to be humbled going into a season.
