Every NHL team has two goaltenders ready to play for each game. The home team is required to have an "emergency goalie" in the building ready to play in case EITHER team should lose both goaltenders during the game. Extremely rare, but it happened last night in Toronto. In this case, the guy is the driver of the Zamboni for the Leafs' near by farm team (AHL). He got the win and the story was blowing up on social media last night... I didn't see anything here on SR about the story, so I thought I'd post, simply because it's a great sports moment.
Zamboni driver saves the day in goal for Carolina
Dave Ayres, a 42-year-old who drives the Zamboni for the Maple Leafs' AHL affiliate, stepped in as the emergency goalie for the Hurricanes on Saturday night, stopping 8 of 10 shots to help Carolina to a 6-3 win.
