I think the team made the right decision overall....sure I think they would have at least made it through the first round if he had played off the bench but long term it was better (this is assuming that things are contentious which I think has been very overblown)
1) We showed the nation that we are competitive without him.
2) We became a more attractive destination for FAs
3) If his side forces our hand, a sign and trade allows us to get the assets to make us a championship contender
Don't budge on an an incentive laden max contract that emphasizes health and fitness. If he stays relatively healthy and in good shape he is definitely worth every penny (relatively speaking) but we can't have a max contract tied to a player who isn't playing....that is the only thing standing in our way of being a championship contender (or if we trade him, making bad choices with the return compensation)
