The New Orleans Saints made as plash on Monday afternoon by signing defensive end Chase Young, the best remaining pass rusher on the free agent market. And that move led to a range of reactions on Twitter and social media as fans grappled with the reality that, yes, the Saints had enough salary cap space to pull it off. Here’s a quick look at what was being said in the aftermath of this big addition for the black and gold:

Teaming up Cameron Jordan with Chase Young could bring out the best of them

Look at Chase Young and Cameron Jordan and you’ll see two players in very different stages of their careers. Jordan is putting the finishing touches on a career he hopes will earn him a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Young is joining the New Orleans Saints with visions of catapulting his career to greater heights, where he’ll earn a life-changing contract in a year or two and join Jordan on that Hall of Fame trajectory.

And Jordan, 10 years Young’s senior, is a different player now than he was a decade ago. He’s still reliable in run defense; few defensive ends set a harder edge...

The first week of free agency was capped, fittingly, by the New Orleans Saints signing Chase Young — arguably the best remaining player looking for a new team in 2024. And this followed a full week of activity with quarterbacks being traded and some teams already taking action to better position themselves going into this year’s NFL draft.

So how did it shake up our first-round mock draft? Here’s the scoop on our latest predictions for the first 32 picks:

Signing Chase Young likely takes Saints out of the running for 2025 comp picks

It was fun while it lasted. The New Orleans Saints have enjoyed the benefits of compensatory draft picks in recent years, but signing Chase Young makes it unlikely they’ll see any extra picks in 2025. Few teams have received as many comp picks as the Saints over the last four draft cycles, owing to their losses in free agency:

Remember, comp pics are awarded based on free agents lost against those signed in the previous offseason. And before the Saints signed Young, they were breaking even according to the analysts at Over The Cap who predict comp picks every year. After signing Young...

Chase Young signing with Saints may signal the end of Payton Turner era

Chase Young will be taking someone’s spot in the rotation after the New Orleans Saints signed him to a one-year, $13 million contract on Monday (with every dollar guaranteed once his pen touched paper). The Saints are bringing back all of their major contributors from 2023 at defensive end, but the group performed so poorly that it makes sense for Young to elbow someone aside.

It just might be Payton Turner drawing the short straw. The 2021 first-round pick hasn’t lived up to expectations, and it’s almost a foregone conclusion that the Saints will not pick up his fifth-year option for...

Saints expected to sign former Vikings G/T Oli Udoh to a 1-year deal, per report

The New Orleans Saints are expected to sign former Viking G/T Oli Udoh to a 1-year deal, per report

Udoh started 18 games for the Minnesota Vikings over a 5-year period after being selected in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. In 2021, he started 16 games allowing only one sack that season. This would be the same season where new OC Klint Kubiak spent his lone year calling plays for the Vikings. A little familiarity there.

Saints will likely look to invest more at this spot in the coming weeks and likely early in the draft as well.

Saints guaranteed every dollar of Chase Young's $13 million contract

Whew. This is a big deal. The New Orleans Saints guaranteed every dollar of their $13 million contract with free agent defensive end Chase Young, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and confirmed by CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson.

But as is always the case with this team, don’t expect that to mean a simple $13 million salary cap charge on their accounting books. Depending on how this deal is structured, Young’s cap hit for 2024 could be as low as $3.5 million. Here’s how the accounting would look with four “ghost years” set to void at the end of the 2024 league year:

The risk in doing this...

Drew Brees says even retired quarterbacks are relieved by Aaron Donald's retirement

Even retired quarterbacks are happy to see Aaron Donald hanging up his cleats. Or at least that’s how Drew Brees feels. The legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback congratulated his old rival “on an unbelievable career” with the Los Angeles Rams, where Donald spent a decade sacking passers like Brees.

They went head-to-head five times, including the playoffs, with Brees’ Saints winning twice (and the less said of that playoff debacle, the better). Donald sacked Brees twice but hit the quarterback 11 times, including the infamous play that broke Brees’ throwing hand early in the 2019...

According to Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz, the New Orleans Saints are expected to sign defensive end Chase Young. It’s a one-year deal worth up to $13 million.

Chase Young previously spent the latter half of last season with the 49ers, being traded to San Francisco from the Washington Commanders during the 2023 season. He was the second overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

He’s had an up-and-down career, and that could very well be due to injuries. In 2021, he tore his ACL, and the severity of the injury caused Young to have an extended recovery time. So far in his five-year career...
