Report: Kirk Cousins left Vikings in large part because he was told they would be drafting a first round QB (1 Viewer)

Did they? Or did they alert Drew to the fact, when he walked in the war room during the draft, a few selections before we were to pick, and then he was alerted to the fact that his successor may be picked?

Brees said he told the Saints in 2016 he was starting to think about retirement and they needed to start looking for his successor. They informed him of their interest of Mahomes before the draft and he said that he was looking forward to mentoring him.

That's true, but it's dumb of the Falcons to sign him to $100 million guaranteed contract while either knowing how he felt about it or not bothering to talk to him about it until they were on the clock about to draft Penix.
Falcons could’ve gave courtesy to Cousins. But I don’t believe he was completely left in the dark about the team’s 1st round pick plans predraft. He knowingly signed a deal that has most of his guarantees paid in the first 2 years while he’ll be 38 years old after the 2nd year. It’s hard to believe their draft plans wasn’t discussed for 6 weeks since contract negotiations.

It looks more like Cousins lacks awareness towards the reality of his age and injury recovery. Both of his FA suitors are trying to have short-long term contingency plans in place behind him at QB. Plus the fact that the Falcons could lose picks next year for tampering with Cousins makes him look really selfish throughout all of this. He thinks the team should just be axxed out of future draft picks, no cap room and no long term plan at QB to pacify his 100M selfcenteredness.

He's a 38yr old QB, why would he not think a team would be looking to get younger at the position, they would do it for any other position where the starter is in their late 30's.

He'll be 36 in August. He'd probably feel better if they did this in two years than he does with them doing it before he's played a down. Because that rookie 1st round QB clock has started. And that rookie 1st round QB turns 24 this week.

Maybe. But, there are reports that he had no idea that was the plan until they were on the clock and had decided to take Penix. If that's true, they either didn't bother to make sure Cousins knew or they didn't make the decision until they were on the clock. Neither is a good look for a team. If you are going to make a guy you franchise QB and team leader, you better make damn sure he knows if you plan to draft a guy at #8 that you want to replace him in a year or two.

So, maybe Cousins just wasn't willing to see reality, but while he may have expected them to invest in a QB at some point, given the $100 million guaranteed and what I think was a promise to make a run with him, I'm not sure he can be expected to see them using the #8 pick on a QB when they have clear needs at pass rusher and probably WR. They even tried to trade back up in the first which would have mortgaged the future. I'm thinking if Cousins knew they were going to use the #8 pick on a QB, he would have signed elsewhere considering that is why he decided to leave the Vikings.

They are trying to go for it short term while also committing to a long term rebuild. That's a really tough needle to thread. Maybe it works out, but if it turns out that the guy you have committed $100 to for two years and is supposed to be the team leader and QB mentor is not happy, then it's a rough way to start. Could work out if Penix turns out to be a star (I don't think he will), but anything less than that and it just looks like they couldn't commit to a plan.

Again, what position would a team not being looking to get younger at if said position was occupied by a 36yr old.

If that's the case why even sign him? They got that old just two months ago by signing him. Supposedly they told him they might draft a QB. But they didn't tell him they'd be drafting one in the top 10. That's a different animal. Teams don't sit on 1st round QBs for years anymore. Fans will be screaming for Penix the first time KC thows a pick.

Falcons didn't owe Cousins sheet.

He forked them over on tampering, 'hey kirk we're gonna draft a qb." Kirk next day on PM show a week before the draft....... yea the "Falcons are going to draft a QB"

The way yall are talking is as if Kirk has been a Falcon for the past 15 years. He has been a Falcon for a month.

That’s not true. Chiefs did it and the Packers did it as well (two teams that has found success doing it). All teams operate differently. There is no patent to how a team finds a successor.

Mahomes sat one year. Seven years ago. Love is an unusual situation. But after sitting 4 years he was the same age Penix is now. Has anyone done it since Love? If Penix sits four years he'll be 28 before he starts a game. Top 10 pick. Not happening. I'll laugh if it does though.
