Did Meachem do enough yesterday? (1 Viewer)

i would keep him. hopefully next year he can get a better grasp of the offense and begin to thrive in the system. he simply has no trade value either.

didnt moss go for a third?
meach is no moss

Just curious, did he have to grasp the offense that much at Tennesse?? Wasn't he pretty good there? What happened? Is it because Payton is such a genius in the Offense that he does not understand the plays?

Are you really surprised that Payton's offense is more complex than Fulmer's? Also, Brees is a known perfectionist who expects nothing less out of his receivers. That's why he's been upset with Shockey for running shoddy routes.

B. Trade bait

If he's bad enough to get rid of, why exactly do you think someone will trade for him?

Show me a single 2nd year WR who had only produced very little yet was then traded for a draft pick.

Meachum will be given every chance this offseason and training camp 2009 to compete for a position. In his third year, I believe that he will either step up enough to warrant the escalating salary he will be getting or traded/cut. His value IMO would be NO higher than a 4h round choice.
I still believe the guy can make it, but I don't think he'll get beyond this year!

geesh you guys are such perfectionist when it comes to meachem, but accepting when it's colston or moore.. not saying meachem has had the production of those 2.. but you have to see, colston and moore both have had as many drops in 1 game, than meachem has had on his career here. Meachem just doesn't get the opportunities for whatever reason. He beats his man consistantly.
and saying he can't even pass up patten is incorrect.. patten is the one the sideline, not meachem.
Giving up on him would be a big MISTAKE!!!. as far as trades, i dont' see him commanding so much at this point.. and we'd do much more by keeping him and start using the kid more. HE's doing a lot, in as blocking WR.. his ypc is unbelievable., and only 2 drops. he just doesnt get targeted.. give him another offseason to get his routes crisper.
and prob with a meachem, devery, bush lined up out. brees would dump it for 10 yards, cause he doesn't have the arm to put it that far to keep up with those 3's speed. every deep ball, the speedsters are having to slow up or comeback to get. Love brees, but he doesn't have the arm strength to keep up with the speed in that corp.

I still don't understand why we never had Meachem on one side, Henderson on the other and Reggie in the slot. Tell Meach and DH to run fast as they can down the sideline, with Reggie in the middle.

Who you gonna cover?

You keep one safety over the top, spy Bush with a LB, and blitz the hell out of Brees with some or all of the remaining 3 defenders. We've seen that song and dance before. There's a reason Payton loves to work that intermediate passing game, and Devery and Meach are not good at those routes by any stretch of anyone's imagination.

I say keep Meach and let Devery go. I think Meach has more "upside" than Devery. If Devery has a nagging injury (hammy or something like that) he is useless because he has proven over the seasons that he is only a straight line burner. He does not want to make the catch anywhere near the middle. I think Meach has made a few and given the opportunity will make more.

meach will be given another year. guy has a lot of talent, and this was essentially his rookie year. he's got too good of a combo of size and speed to not let develop. i mean moore was on the practice squad last year too. sometimes it takes a little time for receivers to "get it"

I think he'll be fine, the guy has shown the ability when he has the ball in his hands, sure its frustrating that he isnt getting the playing time we all would think someone of his draft status should recieve, but we are pretty deep at reciever and Coach Payton is a little arrogant when it comes to who he gives playing time, he see's the players as chest pieces...but I think he will be a good player...he's explosive thats for sure...

I'll ask again.

Show me a single WR only playing one season of ball with very limited production who was then traded for a draft pick that would justify his value.

I swear that some people think every player in the NFL is worth a draft pick. Drafted players are like new cars. If they don't work out in the first 2 years you aren't going to trade them for even close to what you spent on them. In this case you'd be hard pressed to garner a 5th or 6th round pick for Meachem assuming anyone would trade for him at all. With his potential it's better to keep him on the roster.
