Gleason bothered that “no one seemed shocked” by Gregg Williams’ pre-game rant (1 Viewer)

Since the audio tape was released, I always felt and voiced that Steve was mainly responsible for its release. At the time, I made these comments I was flamed heavily and given an infraction.
.

Everything that I have seen written contradicts your theory.

“[W]hen he specified the other players’ injuries, that to me, was over the line,” Gleason said in a rough cut of the show, which PFT obtained from HBO.

Gleason had an even bigger concern. “The real problem was no one seemed shocked,” he said. “There as no discussion of ‘Wow, did we just hear that?’”
we cant possibly be able to tell the context in which he made those statements. For all we know, his next statement could have been "that to me shows me that the players didnt take him seriously. Thats why it bothers me. This was just hyperbole. The Saints got punished for hyperbole."

Do not let the media turn us against Steve Gleason. Of all people, we should know better than anybody not to rush to judgement. Cmon Who Dats! We are better than that.

Finally... a voice of reason. Thank you, saintsfan26.

Gleason, more than anyone else should know the courage Jon Vilma has displayed in putting everything on the line, so really Steve's camp just has to shut up about the whole "bounty" thing. Bringing this trash up at this time could influence the Judge ever so slightly. Gregg Williams bluster didn't happen overnight. Steve's a big boy. He understands what the NFL is all about. He knows enough to where he would jack hammer a dude in the sack hard enough to make him sterile, so his hands aren't the cleanest. So Steve is shocked by talk about the ACL by Williams, but thinks it's ok to crush a guy's testicles. This just smacks of agenda driven, yes and I'm sure his buddy is the ringleader and still manipulating.

lol..do you work in PR cause dang man, I appreciate the postive spin you can put on things for the saints haha.

I agree that no one should judge Gleason, he has right to his opinion- and certainly no one should turn against him for that. He's the exact same guy.

I disagree that people need to pretend there is some crazy "context" to what he said. Yeah, it doesn't look great, but a lot of players have said the same thing AND a lot have said the opposite. I'd say it's about 50/50 on players that thought the speech was acceptable and those who felt it was overboard. Everyone has their own feeling on the issue.

I'm sure Gleason has heard numerous type speeches before...but not having played for Williams or hearing the type of comments that Williams most likely made a thousand times...he may have been a little shocked at Williams' type of rah-rah type BS....the other players were just use to it basically....

Gleason is surely entitled to express his opinion. After listening to the speech being played back, sure it's terrible. That's very obvious. What is a player to do about it at the time but ignore the crazy stuff and just play ball!! Gleason's right, there is no need to mention specific injuries like GW did. He went way too far, but blame that on GW and leave the players out if it. Their job description pretty much says shut up and listen to the coach. That's all they could do. GW was a loose cannon who deserved to be punished. A life time ban on GW would have sent a clear message and been a fair punishment. SP should have gotten a max 4 games for losing institutional control to that idiot and the players should have had to take classes the whole off season on what the league expects. (deprogramming from GW). Perfect punishment..... Perfect solution!!

Regardless of what Steve said at the end of day it still doesn't prove anything. You have one person's opinion about the thought process of 20 or more players. No reaction to the speech didn't lead to compliance on the field and that's all that matters. Also, Giants players came out one week later publicly and was talking about basically the same thing, and the league didn't overreact, in they classified it as nothing happened on the field therefore no problem.

Shocked is why Gleason is taping Greg Williams when you have Sean Payton
If its for my son why not tape the best?

Maybe he's saying what he believes. Just because you don't like what he's saying doesn't make him a sell out.

I was saying if there is a reason behind him saying it, like $$$, then he is a sellout. The timing is what makes this questionable IMO. Late to the piñata.

It's very hard to interpret meaning when we just have an excerpt of a conversation. That said, I think krushing has the most reasonable take on it. The rest of the players had been hearing GW's rants and had learned to ignore them, to Steve it was the first time he had heard it and it was a little surprising to him. Nothing more to it.

If this is true, then it would seem that GW's rhetoric is unique and different than what's normal, I guess...I can't wait to catch the show to get the full context. M

No way that Gleason wants to hurt the Saints in any way. Remember, he was the one who was not willing to throw the Saints under the bus when the NFLPA urged Pamphilon to release the tape even though they must have known what this would mean for GW and the team and that it was against Gleason's wishes.
To me it sounds more like that he is surprised that GW could create a culture in the Saints locker room where things like these could be said even if the players obviously didn't take it literally.
