Punches in New York? (1 Viewer)

she saw a shark fin, huh?

i got a 44 yr old that has that same irrational fear and i stopped having that conversation with her. lololol

She did not see a shark fin, that’s when it starts to get somewhat rational.

Pepper spray, martial arts, and concealed carry should help woman defend themselves in New York.
But if I was your daughter/mother/sister/wife/girlfriend/SR.com friend, would it not still concern you were I to visit such a place where those things seem de regueur?

There is nothing irrational about fear of sharks. They do kill people whether by accident or not. The odds are small, but I choose not to put myself in a situation where I can't see something that might try to eat me. But, obviously, some places are more likely to have shark attacks than others.

It’s entirely irrational. There were 91 recorded shark bites in 2023, 10 of which were fatal. In the world.

In the US alone, 75 million people go in the ocean annually. On any given day if you choose to go in the ocean, you are likely one of 10s of millions going into the ocean that day. Even if the shark bites are underreported by 100%, there are still only .5 (one half) shark bites per day in the world.

We accept all sorts of dangers every day. Car accidents. Fatal food poisoning. Getting struck by lightning. All of those things are substantially more likely to happen than being bitten by a shark while swimming in the ocean.

All those things I can not control. I can control whether I put myself in a situation to be attacked by a shark. It's perfectly rational especially if you are at a place during a time when shark attacks are more likely.

Can you choose to take the risk knowing the odds? Sure. But that doesn't make it irrational to not take the risk while knowing the odds.

Clearly you are just being an irrational silly woman Marsha. /sarcasm

That would be a strange relationship, I don't even know how that's even possible. lol How? Nevermind..

I guess it would, but you said, you weren't going to New York. Are you going to New York, or not?

I feel this a trick question.

Woman are strong and powerful, that's my final answer. lol

To be honest, I really don't know enough information about New York, to make a judgement call. If you are unsure about the safety of visiting New York, I would probably refer you to your relatives/friends that live there.

I'm really not a big city person, I feel really uncomfortable in them. So, trust your gut yo!

Choosing not to do something you otherwise would enjoy doing based the degree of risk posed by being bitten by a shark is senseless and irrational - generically.

Yes, if you are at a place with a known frequency of shark bites particularly at a given time, and you elect behavior based on that refined risk data, that’s likely more rational depending on the degree of risk shown by that information.

Generally speaking, not swimming in the ocean for fear of sharks is irrational. Not going to New York City for fear of crime is irrational. People aren’t always rational - I get that. But it can still be pointed out that the selected behavior modification based on the supposed risk doesn’t really make sense.

My uncle that lives there is pushing 90. I figured a trip to NYC is imminent .... if I should choose to attend his funeral. Plus I USED to love going to New York. But I kinda got over that.

That's where I'm lucky. I don't enjoy being in water outside of a pool anyway.

I do agree that making a behavior modification based on a supposed risk doesn't make sense, but if it is in fact a risk, it can be rational to avoid it especially if you don't get any benefit from the activity. In a situation where you get zero benefit from an activity and there is risk from that activity, no matter how small, it is rational to avoid that risk. Just like it's rational to take a risk doing something that has a high risk associated with it, if you get immense pleasure or benefit from the activity.

It's all about weighing risk and reward.

so, chuck is a shark

Who I hope is teaching his daughter martial arts and getting her CCW certification so that life is enjoyable and satisfying.

What's shark for the goose is shark for the gander.
