Saints sign Running Back Velus Jones Jr.

It's quite obvious some of y'all only look at stat sheets and headlines.

He had ZERO fumbles in college across 62 games and 6 seasons, though he only played 5 seasons and redshirtted his freshman season at USC.

His fumbles came bunched together at PR in 2022 when he had 3. It was like a cade of the yips.

No fumbles in 2023.

1 in 2024.

He's a weapon, who can play KR, RB and WR with unteachable speed.

Here's Baldy breaking him down as a RB

Low risk high reward signing

Exactly. We have seen that KR is part of the game again. It makes sense to go get a guy who can take it to the house at anytime on KR. He's also a bigger/sturdy guy so that helps with durability. IIRC, he doesn't didn't have an evolved route tree, but this dude can play a the Z and take a top off a defense.

Well, there is a serious thought in this opine. How often does hiring another team’s throwoffs really benefit our team? On the other hand, drafting, developing, and resigning our own guys seems to me a better route to take especially in the long run.
Keep in mind a team always tries to retain their best guys.
Back in 2006, the rebuild through free agency did work especially when we snatched Drew Brees. Even then he was considered damaged goods.

I like the signing! Low risk high reward. Are we gonna use in as a RB a WR or a KR/PR?

Qb and rb not addressed in fa, could one of these be our pick at 9?

They have given CEH a one year deal and Jones may be a RB so I don't think it's true that we haven't addressed RB. I would like to add a young RB for the future, but we actually have some pretty good depth right now with Kamara, CEH, Mims, Miller, and maybe Jones. Hopefully we add a talented young RB at some point, but I would not call it a need or a must.

Baldinger’s video is very interesting. Highlights can be deceiving, but they can also be intriguing.

Yeah, he looked good in that video. But then I have to ask what did he do for the rest of the year and why did the Bears let him go? But, he's certainly worth a shot on a low priced deal because you can't teach that speed and quickness.

I do wonder if they see him as a "weapon" that can move around to various positions of if they see him in a specific position while also being a WR/KR. I don't really recall Moore really using a "Joker" type player anyplace that he has been. But I don't know if that's by choice or if he just never really had that kind of player. I could see Jones being a Corredale Patterson type who took awhile to find the right fit before finally making an impact in Atlanta. He's never been a "great" player, but he's a good guy to have on a team to make plays here and there. Although Patterson is a bit bigger and had more production early in his career.

Jones has speed and can play in multiple places: RB, WR, and Returner. His numbers on paper are good.
He's cheap. A 3rd round pick from 2022 in Chicago that went sideways in the lame Matt Eberflus tenure. Muffed and fumbled them into some losses.

He's an interesting roll of the dice on someone who could be not only depth, but be a joker on 5+ plays per game. He could be a rotational returner.

But he'll need to fix his brain/hands and he'll need to have a camp that makes him a candidate for gameday active roster.

Jim Miller would talk about him from time to time on moving the chains.

He is very fast and talented, but jim said he would literally have panic attacks when the ball was kicked to him.

He would muff kickoffs on a regular basis and Bears fans hated him, because despite all his talent and flashes during the preseason, he would choke whenever the real action began.

A very frustrating player, but does have rare speed and talent

Tiki Barber had 9 fumbles in his first 3 seasons and when he finally became a starter in his 4th season he had another 9 fumbles.

People are freaking out about the 3 he had in his rookie season, but has had 1 since.

He has the talent to give him a chance and see if he can put them behind him.

A very low risk, high reward signing.
