2018 NFL coach rankings: Bill Belichick and then ...

This paragraph is all there is on Coach Payton and the Saints

"2) Sean Payton, New Orleans Saints
Don't be surprised. Sean Payton is one of just eight head coaches on this list with a Super Bowl ring. Going beyond that, Payton pulled off the rare feat of reaching the postseason (and winning there) after embracing a major philosophical shift, from a Drew Brees-centric team to one that relied on its running backs and defense. Payton was on the verge of another NFC Championship Game this past January ... before his Saints were hit by a Lake Minnetonka miracle."

and they don't point out that its not coincidence that we were heavier with the run in 09 too. When Payton commits to the run or at least more balance, we do well.

There are great arguments both ways for cause and effect. Do we run just to run, or is it because we're in the lead? Or because the passing game has them on their heels? Or because the defense gets the ball back? Personally, I think we are so used to 350 yard passing games that we call a balanced offense "run heavy" :hihi:

I know. But Payton himself has admitted to getting away from the run in the years in between. I agree with you that there is a cause and effect situation to take in but in those years where we put up far larger differences in pass attempts, I can't help but feel a difference in how we move the ball and control the game. You see the benefits of running more when you do pass, as well. I will not mind at all if Payton makes some assumptions about the cause and effect

He has always wanted balance, but seldom has it. When he does have balance, he has a good year. Or does the good year cause the balance... ?

We weren't a run first team in 2009. We passed to gain a lead and then we ran the ball to salt the game away. Last year we actually ran early and often. It was a completely different offense under Payton.

while I would agree with that to a point - we did have some high margins that year - I think we reached those numbers by also keeping defenses more honest early on. In a few of the years immediately after he just went straight pass happy. I would have to see numbers based on first halves of games for 09 compared to the following few years and I for one am not that good on the stat sights. I do agree that 17 looked different though. There was complete faith in the running game.

The one thing that would elevate this team from a very good team to a great team is a great pass rush.
