Twenty-eight people were injured Saturday night (Feb. 25) when a suspected drunken driver crashed a grey pickup truck into spectators at the Krewe of Endymion parade in the Mid-City section of New Orleans, police said. The crash was reported at about 6:45 p.m. at North Carrollton and Orleans avenues.

"He took out rows of people," witness Greg McNeely said.

Officials said 21 people, including a police officer and a child, were taken to seven hospitals. Five were in critical condition. Seven other people declined treatment. The police officer's injuries were not considered life-threatening.

the driver is a kid - maybe not even in his 20s

as bad as it is, it's fortunate that it wasn't truly deadly - as i've followed it he hit a dumptruck and another car before veering into the crowd - without that slowing him down, it could have been utterly tragic

Honestly, with as much youth and booze as is inevitable around Mardi Gras the city is blessed that this doesn't happen as much. Tragic for all those families hurt out to enjoy the parade for sure. Prayers that no one passes and that all the victims recover fully.

Hope this kid gets destroyed in court.

Thoughts and prayers out to everyone affected. Just a stupid avoidable thing.

Agreed.. ive always said, there needs to be much more of a stigma around drinking & driving than there is, nationwide but especially in New Orleans.. im the least judgemental person you'll ever meet in your life in most cases-- but i will judge an ******* who's been drinking and driving (or 'buzzed driving') all day long... Penalties need to increase, and there needs to be less tolerance for this crime.
