interesting though most people i know refer to it as soda or cold drink.

I might ask for a sodapop or a soda, but never a pop. Nobody I knew growing up would ever just say "Get me a pop."

And no, not all of the US thinks of New York as "The City". Once you're past the Rockies, The City is whichever metroplex is closest.

Great find. We were having this discussion at work the other day about different labels/names for things/places/people.

Here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, we go to the beach. Baltimore, Pennsylvania go to the ocean and Jersey goes to the shore. Same place, all different names.

Then you get in the whole accent thing and it throws everyone for a loop......

Love the big white spot over Louisiana for the sandwich one. Obviously po-boy was not an option.

Also, growing up, I always took the existence of drive through liquor stores for granted. When I was working in the tourism industry, that was probably the thing I heard about most. "I can't believe you have these! How is that legal!? THEY'RE GREAT!"

In 20 years in WA state I think I've heard pop less than a half dozen times, and always people from Ohio.

I don't really trust their sampling, but it's a cool idea.

I took getting a to go cup at a bar for granted. When I moved away people looked at me like I was insane for looking for a plastic cup to take my drink with me.

From a fascinating documentary on sociolinguistics:

American Tongues is the documentary. If you're interested in this topic, generally, then i recommend watching the entire thing. There's a shorter version, with some editing of the more inflammatory and racist bits that's meant for showing in schools and a longer one that isn't as edited, but there is a fair amount of ignorant and racist comments in the full version, just fyi.
