Training camp is upon us, and with it, the true start of the season is finally here. The NFL typically deploys referees to the various camps across the country, with the purpose of sharing certain points of emphasis in officiating for the upcoming season. We here at Saints Report wish to do similar before the start of camp in terms of the site’s Posting Guidelines. So, with that, here are some points of emphasis that we want our membership to be aware of as we enter the real football-centric part of the year.

Insulting Saints Players and Staff:
We frown upon members using tactless and rude references like "stinks", "idiot", "sucks", "garbage", etc. when discussing Saints' players, coaches and front office personnel. While constructive criticism is welcome and encouraged here, many players, coaches, front-office personnel and their families frequent the SSF regularly and we ask that you seek a higher level of discourse by at least being respectful and considerate of these people.

As an example for a bit of guidance, criticize the play not the player and the result not the person. “That throw sucked” would be acceptable, while “Drew’s arm sucks” would not. “Keenan couldn’t cover my grandpa today” would be preferable to say “Lewis sucks” or some other personally insulting statement.

Civility:

Free debate is welcome on all the forums and diversity of opinion lies at the heart of a good debate. Toward that end everyone is free to have their own opinion so long as it is expressed in a civil manner, is within the subject matter topic of the forum and does not otherwise violate forum rules.

Calling out other members, whether individually, or as a group, with the intent to embarrass, humiliate, or in a manner that might be perceived as being malicious or derogatory is frowned upon.

We all come from different backgrounds and have some very disparate belief systems that we adhere to, but we are all Saints fans, and thus should be able to treat each other with some modicum of respect. “Attack the post and not the poster”, and “it’s not what you say, but how you say it that matters” are the rules of thumb to follow.
“Seantavius Jones is going to be the next Dez Bryant. The team made a huge mistake letting him go.”
“You’re an idiot” might be applicable, but is an unacceptable reply. “That’s a really stupid opinion to have” is borderline, and would be considered on an individual basis within the overall conversation. “That makes no sense. The stats show (insert data to support your opinion here)” would be the desired response.

Thinly veiled profanity:

Thinly veiled profanity is unacceptable. We allow the use of either all asterisks/symbols or nothing at all.

For example "****" and "*&*%$" are acceptable, while "Fork" or "****ing" are not.

Using "F'n", "Effin" or acronyms like "S T F U" will not fly either, and may result in your permissions being removed.

Edit: 12-12-2011: Context: Even when using all asterisks, you need to be careful of the context in which it is used.

We will no longer allow the "**** the ____" <---insert subject here type comments.

That means no more "**** the Falcons", or "**** the Officials" type comments on any board with the exceptions of the BTL and Locker Room boards (which have their own specific sets of rules (... Everyone knows what it means and I want to keep the main forums within this community family friendly and to a respectable standard.
Guys, if you want to curse, just type it out and let the profanity filter do its job. Don’t try to get around it or “clean up” your own post by say substituting a symbol for a letter or some other tactic. Also, read the verbiage on any pics or gifs that you may want to post, as they are still subject to site rules.

I understand that ten year olds use phrasing on Xbox Live that would be considered inappropriate for an oil rig, but we wish to maintain a higher level of discussion around here, so we encourage each member to exercise their non-profane vocabulary fully when making a point. As my favorite Ken M quote says, “Profanity is the fool’s fig leaf.”

Use the search feature:

There are no medals for being the first to post some breaking information. Take the time to look through the titles on the front page, and to search the site to see if a similar subject has already been started. We do have the ability to merge similar threads, but prefer that it only be used out of necessity, not because of a hastily thrown up bit of info.

These were a few main areas that we felt needed to be addressed before we got into the busy season, but all of the posting guidelines are still and will remain in effect. If you wish to familiarize yourself with them, they can be found at the top of each forum, or you can click on the link below.

Posting Guidelines

And as always, you can shoot a PM to the Mod or Admin of your choice for any questions/rulings/clarifications concerning the site and its moderation.

What we truly desire is that the boards stay enjoyable and inviting for the majority of posters, and that the free flow of opinions and information be done in a respectful and intellectually stimulating fashion. Every effort that you can make to further that vision will be greatly appreciated.

Now here’s to an enjoyable and exciting season of Saints football!

Oh thats interesting...so Typing it out and letting auto-filter handle it doesn't result in an infraction. No more self-editing.

Correct. But again, creative use of the millions of other words available to us is always appreciated.

I'm just proving a point. You don't have to celebrate it, Frank.

Has it always been a rule that we can't criticize players because someone that personally knows them may lurk or post here?

Aside from the reasons watt posted, yes. We have had Norman Hand, Jared Tomich, and Pierre Thomas's sister actually posting on the board in the past. There may have been others as well, but they're the only ones I can recall. No doubt there have been Saints immediate family posting and lurking that I'm not aware of.

There is no rule you cannot criticize a player. You cannot insult a player. You cannot call him names or say he is garbage. You can most certainly say how poorly you think a player is playing and even suggest he be cut or traded.

The problem, and the reason for the original post, is that those who insist on insulting Saints players will claim the board is being run by Nazis with black and gold colored glasses on, refusing to acknowledge the distinction between criticizing a player and insulting a player.

If you go back and read the original post I think it might be more clear to you.

One reason for the rule is that players and family to visit the board. The main reason is that it makes for more civil discourse. Fans are passionate about players they like and most don't like seeing players described in a derogatory way.

OK, but it's good to see **** *** ******* 1 last time.

I sincerely wish ill tidings and calamity befall the professional football organization known as the Atlanta Falcons. May an usually large and rabid animal become vigorously carnal with their designated representatives.
