It be me again!

Glad y'all clicked on another one of my long *** threads to peruse, probably while you're taking your daily :poop: but that's okay! No shame here, I do the same thing; you're amongst friends here. 😅

It was another excitement filled day on Airline as today was one of the "club ticket holder" private practice days that I was slotted into so of course I'll show up for a free snoball, concessions, and watch some football! It didn't seem as hot today as the last few practices I made, but make no doubt about it, it was still pretty hot. Although there were a few moment where we were blessed by the clouds for a minute or two. So feel free to crack open your favorite beverage and jump in head first for the final installment of these 2023 camp observations...

11 vs 11 - Opening full team period was very run-heavy (like they typically are), not much change in the starting defense either except Mathieu was actually in there today; each QB got 4 reps before rotating out, rotation being Carr, Winston, then Haener as every other day has been...
  • Miller run right-outside for a very minimal gain (maybe 1-2 yds max) before Baun comes up and lays a lick on him while shedding a block
  • Kamara pitch right-outside, cuts in on Roby setting the edge to gain ~4-5 yds
  • Williams run middle for ~5 yds
  • Carr incomplete to Kirkwood on a crosser with Roby in coverage, was a late read and a bit overthrown as neither player contested it; Carr's last rep, Winston rotates in...

  • Miller run middle for ~3-4 yds
  • Williams run middle for ~2-3 yds, had to try to squeeze by Bresee who's an absolute unit taking up space in the running lane
  • Merritt pitch right, Lalos has the edge set and makes him cut in
  • Williams run left-middle for ~3-4 yds; Winston's last rep, Haener rotates in...

  • Merriweather run left-middle for ~2 yds, Emili with the stop
  • Merritt run left-middle for ~3-4 yds, narrowly avoiding disaster by way of a blitzing Taylor from the backside for a potential TFL
  • Miller run-left for ~4-5 yds
  • Merriweather run middle for ~6-7 yds; not sure if it's his running style or if he was just letting the blocks develop, but he seems to be a plodder
Special Teams - I touched on some of this in the 8/9 updates thread but re-posting here obviously
  • Lutz appeared to go 1/3 in this period missing from 33 yds and 39 yds before drilling one from 41 yds; however as I stated in the update thread, there was a crosswind from right to left that he was fighting against that could've been the cause of his kicks hooking left; additionally in the next kicking period I noticed that the back-up punter, Lou Hedley, was holding for the kicks but not sure if he was holding for this period which could be another explanation
  • Gillikin and the rest of the punt team also did a bit of a punt walkthrough; he was bombing balls, but the gunners didn't run down at full speed so nothing too noteworthy in this segment other than one of the punts Gillikin drilled hit inside the 5 and James Washington came in with a smooth job downing it at the 1
11 vs 11 - Another full team period where each QB gets 4 reps before rotating out, this one was more run/pass balanced though...
  • Carr to Graham on a short curl for ~4-6 yds
  • Williams run middle and gets SWALLOWED by Saunders for no gain or even possible loss
  • Miller run left for minimal gain, stopped by Werner and Turner, then after the whistle blows it dead Miller keeps jogging downfield and Baun comes up behind and strips the ball
  • Carr to Olave on an out for ~15 yds with Taylor in coverage; Carr's last rep, Winston rotates in...

  • Kamara run left but is grabbed by Roach for a TFL
  • play action, Winston to Olave on a curl for ~8-10 yds sitting down in the hole in the zone between Abram and Yiadom, looked to be Cover 2
  • Winston incomplete to Washington on a crosser, Washington appeared to alligator arm it as there was a lot of traffic due to a defender covering another route (who wasn't even looking for the ball) started to close in on his position and thought he was about to get separated
  • Bresee bursts through the line by the LG for a strip sack (I originally just had down sack but this apparently is the play the forced fumble occurred on); Winston's last rep, Haener rotates in...

  • Haener complete to Hill on quick out for ~5 yds with Orji in coverage
  • Merritt run left but is snatched up by Jack Heflin for a potential TFL or at minimum no gain
  • Haener to Bowden on an out for ~8 yds
  • Miller pitch left for ~8-10 yds
Special Teams
  • Lutz atones for his sins in the previous kicking period by going 3/3 from 33 yds, 42 yds, and 46 yds
11 vs 11 - Final team period of the day, this seemed to be a 2-minute, end of half/game drill trying to get downfield and attempt a FG; this period saw Maye and Howden at the deep safety positions with Mathieu up in more of a nickel back role
  • Carr to Williams on a short out for ~5 yds against zone where Lattimore came up to make the stop
  • Carr incomplete to Olave on a streak with Taylor in tight coverage, almost ended up with an INT but I think they may've called DPI
  • Carr incomplete to Williams on a swing, dropped; everything else was covered
  • Carr incomplete to Olave on a comeback, Carr was flushed right and had to throw on the run, went a bit too high
  • Carr to Graham on a curl for ~5-6 yds between Werner and Mathieu
  • Carr to Graham on an out for ~10-12 yds with Baun in coverage
  • Carr scrambles up middle for ~8-10 yds as everything is covered
  • Carr to Hill on a slant with Werner in coverage
  • Lutz FG is good from 45 yds

  • Winston incomplete to Hill on a short curl, Amadi with the PBU
  • Winston to Hill on a short curl for ~4 yds with Jackson in coverage
  • Winston to Hill on an out for ~12 yds
  • Winston to Hill on a slant for ~6-7 yds with Abram in coverage
  • Winston to Prentice on an arrow for ~5 yds
  • Winston incomplete to Washington on a streak at the back of the endzone and is almost picked off by Adebo; late throw, everything else was covered
  • Merriweather run left ~2-3 yds, Jackson on the stop
  • Lutz FG is good from 50 yds

  • Haener to Shaquan Davis on a short curl for ~8 yds
  • Haener to Davis on a crosser for ~15 yds
  • Haener to Moreau on a ? (missed this route) for ~10 yds
  • Haener to Davis on a ? for ~4-5 yds (missed this route as well but I believe it was either an out or a crosser, just didn't see what side the ball he was lined up on), Haener flushed left
  • Haener to Graham on a short out for ~3-4 yds, looked to be Cover 1
  • Haener incomplete to Coutee on a streak, Pride in coverage; pass was very high and out of bounds, potentially a throwaway?
  • Miller run left for ~2-3 yds, Lalos on the stop
  • Lutz FG is good from 47 yds

And that's a wrap for today and for this season's installments of training camp observations with me as the rest of the practices for this year are closed to the public.

Hopefully y'all enjoyed reading these as much as I had taking notes and typing these up to post on here for y'all. We'll see what's happening next year with the facility renovations if they have to relocate training camp or not, but if there are at least a few practices open to the public in New Orleans, I'll be there! Now it's time for my "Post Thread" button to go into hibernation for the foreseeable future. 😅😂

See y'all around the SSF and the Superdome,

Al ⚜️

From your observation, do you feel a difference from last year? Does the d line looks faster and active. Did Haener look as good as people are saying?
I was going to ask the same thing about Haener since you’ve seen him for 3 practices

Al ⚜️
Thank you sir!!! That's what training camp on this board used to look like. Great notes!!!

From your observation, do you feel a difference from last year? Does the d line looks faster and active. Did Haener look as good as people are saying?
The DL definitely appears to be more disruptive than last year, a lot of QB's getting flushed during reps trying to buy time so that means either the DL is really good or the OL might be bad and still not gelled yet. However it also can be said that maybe both units are going tit for tat, but the secondary being absolutely smothering is causing QB's nowhere to go with the ball. Fingers crossed that's the case!

As for Haener, I feel he looks pretty good. The first practice I went to on the 31st he looked the best, Sunday he wasn't as hot, but today I felt he was very consistent. Do I think he's ready to assume the QB2 role yet? Probably not (just based on these 3 practices), but that could change once we can see him in a live game setting. But as of right now, I still think he would be better served as QB3 for the year, but again that could change depending on how good he does in game action. 🙂
I was going to ask the same thing about Haener since you’ve seen him for 3 practices
I gotchu, my dude! Right up there! ⬆️
Who :poop:s at night? Psycho
Hahahah, I mean it's not super often but when duty calls! I'm more of a mid-day guy myself though, very rarely in the mornings. 😅
Appreciate these every year Alan. 🥂
Eternally grateful, Ellias! Love reading your work posted here as well. 🥰
Your reports are better than what the talking heads give us. Thanks man!
I certainly try, perret! I'm glad I started doing these because this year the local media really seems to just be giving crumbs for some reason. 🥺

I don't know if it's because most of the reporters are just trying to save the majority of their good info for behind their paywalls or what, but I remember the days where I'd literally scroll through the daily camp practice update thread that would be 10-12 pages (8 of which being solid tweets in succession) by the time I was home and ready to start typing these threads and go tweet by tweet, filling in small pieces of information that I missed here and there (an occasional route, who was in coverage, ect.) and even link videos to plays that were posted for the full training camp experience.

There's honestly none of that this year in any of the threads it seems and we're lucky to get totals on how players have been performing so far, which I can't exactly provide since I'm only there a few practices vs. every day like they are. But we be trying! 🤪
Always mighty welcome, rsmith! Thank you for reading and the comment! ☺️

Greatly appreciative of the generous words, saintpack!

And I know, right? I'm just trying to pick up where the mighty "jubo" left off with these observation threads! I'd always enjoy her threads and when I first started my take, the original plan was to try and make different days she would attend where we could have an observation thread nearly every day there was an open practice where the SR community could benefit even more.

Unfortunately though, I haven't seen her post any threads since June 2019 and her profile says she was last active 6/25/2019 so I certainly hope she's alright.
I was ready to drop a like on this post after reading the opener, appreciate these posts.
Hahaha, big thanks, Rouxble!

Honestly, the openings and closings are typically the things that take me the longest to write as I never know what to say; the middle part (or meat and potatoes) is literally just transcribed from what I wrote and I'll fill in the other words to form descriptive, coherent thoughts as opposed to "12 crosser, ~15 yds, 1 in cov" or "incomp, 13 dig, 23 PBU" ect. The longest part of that is having to flip back and forth to the roster when players change numbers or its newer guys I'm not fully acclimated to wearing those numbers.

But as for the opening and closings, I don't want to be too repetitive saying the same junk thread after thread, knowing it'll get stale quickly if so, so I try to keep things loose and fresh. 😁

Glad to hear Breese is lookin explosive. They’ve had a few saints players say he’s very quick

I think reporters are not allowed to take video of practice scrimmages anymore

Thanks as always Alan12, love your play-by-play style.

Very happy and hopeful about Bresee, I wasn't really sure about the pick.
