MariahGeddon* 2024!

  • The objective of the game is to go as long as possible without hearing Mariah's Christmas classic, "All I Want for Christmas is You".
  • The game starts on December 1st at 6 AM and runs through midnight on December 24th.
  • Only the original version applies. You may enjoy remixes and covers.
  • We are using the honor system: you're out as soon as you hear and recognize the song. Post here to indicate when you're out.
Your 2024 MariahGeddon Winners!
Also, the ded in the @buzd Rebirth Bonus Round & Lounge are all winners according to @buzd. Be that as it may.

@nolaspe and @Arathrael are repeat winners (2022, 2023,2024) and are exempt from the 2025 contest but must not partake in any plan to entrap, ensnare, or otherwise dupe players in 2025 under severe penalty of Christmas music punishment to be realized at the date and time the violation is committed.

@swampdawg1969 gets a ~two-week bye, with them included in the shenanigans starting at 6 AM, December 12.

Our single-year winners get a ~one-week bye, joining the festivities at 6 AM, December 6. NOTE: the dates for the byes have changed! Since the contest ends on December 24th we use math to divide the number by four, getting six-day weeks for the contest. Do not try this at work, your employers will frown on it.

(Any repeat winners from this group will get byes in 2026. As contest director, I am excluding myself from the contest. I'm subjected to #AIWFCIY when I am ded.).

Everyone who decides to take the plunge must declare entry between December 1st and December 4th by posting that declaration in this thread.

Wham!A!Geddon is CANCELLED

No one liked you anyhow.

@buzd's Rebirth Bonus Round & Lounge - New for 2024!

Based on a suggestion from @livefromDC...

Once you're eliminated, you have a second chance to win a new challenge. As normal, once you've been murdered (eliminated, sorry, @buzd ), you report it in the thread. Now that you're in the afterlife, you can win the challenge for the deceased by reporting each time you randomly (keyword, randomly) hear the song again until Christmas day. The people who survive without hearing the song, of course, win the main challenge. But the person who hears it most often wins the @buzd Rebirth Bonus Round & Lounge.

Here are the rules/guidelines (honor system applies):
  • Each time you hear the song, you must post how you encountered the earworm and include you're own running total in math we can all understand.
  • You can seek out the song by lingering in places that will definitely play it, but you can't directly be responsible for making the song play.
  • No repeat listening.
  • No self-starting - you cannot punch play, drop the needle, request the stream, etc., and count it as yours. It must be random.
This thread will be rendered un-sticky soon and will be expected to regain stickiness late in 2025.
* Now with a NEW & IMPROVED image!

i think i'm going with inoculation method - i'm going to make my students play it on repeat and i'll sing and dance along to really turn them off of the song and make them avoid it for the next month
not sure if i can fit in her outfit, but that's why we have a costume class

Count me in. However I need a rules reminder.

If I am unfortunate enough to hear a snippet of it in a TV commercial or show, does that eliminate me? Or, do the rules only apply to store Muzak systems or other audio sources playing the full version?

all i want for Christmas is to avoid additional stress, e.g. having to duck a hugely popular Christmas song

per my rights, i'm declaring shenanigans

ho ho ho :cautious:

A snippet in a commercial would be OK, but hearing it in a TV show would count you out because the expectation is that the TV show would play enough of the song to be the full version. If you hear something that you're not sure of, ask for a ruling privately and provide a link to what you heard.

Making this sticky in 3...2...1...

I'm in. Though not as remote as Sam, I am rather a hermit in the boondocks.

I’m in! How will you know I was listening to the song? Someone posts it on the EE board we all lose.
If someone tries to derail you by posting it here there is one thing you can do - make sure you have autoplay turned off.
