No, not some of the cool flashbacks like 2006. Or 2009 - 2011. Or 2013. Or 2017 -2020.

You know the ones I'm talking about. 7-9, 7-9 and more 7-9.

They can go up and down the field on anybody, but a QB wearing 9 has to play near-perfect just for the possibility of a win.

Oh I see it alright. Sick offense and historically bad defenses. Yep.

No. Because our defense was beyond bad.

It's very similar, except by that point post Bountygate hoax narrative nobody in the media felt any empathy for Brees the way they do for Burrow.

Don't get me wrong, I like Burrow. Just noticing the "OMG can you believe how the rest of the Bengals team is squandering Burrow!" when those years of peak Brees at 7-9 were exactly the same and there was none of that. Sean Payton's ALL TIME LEAGE WORST defenses nullified any and all offensive genius.

I mean, we won a Super Bowl and literally robbed at a chance for a second one, so I'll take that tradeoff.

I love the way Payton used big guys in the slot and used his TEs. CIN does that very well.

We never had a WR as good as Chase. Burrow is magic in the pocket, and will probably compile Brees-like stats if he stays healthy.

I always hated the fact that the Saints had such a good offense and terrible defense. But I’d be enjoying the season much more right now if that were the case even if the W/L record were the same.

Yep. Games are just way more fun when you are watching near-perfect QB play every week. Those 7-9 seasons were always enjoyable in a weird way.

Like we knew we weren’t going anywhere, but it was still fun just watching the team compete. You knew we were building something and always just a good draft or a couple strokes of luck away from greatness.

Yes, been thinking that. Heck, even Annie Agar made that comp in one of her bits.

I've watched several Cinci games this year and I honestly can't put my finger on what's wrong with their defense. It's not horrible, it's just not good.
All I know is that it isn't their LDE. T-Rex is killing it over there.

Indeed, they were. And those three straight 7-9 seasons provide proof that the real key to that entire era was the man not on the sideline but actually in the arena. The man of the hour....the little tower of power....Drew Brees. With him under center, there was always a better than average chance in every game. But indeed, you have to play defense at some point at all levels of football to win.

Nothing weird about it. The entire Brees/Payton era, we were always in it. We fans could legitimately go into every game and every season knowing we had a shot. Didn't always turn out that way, but we weren't delusional.
We were legit contenders. Some of the best 7-9 teams in NFL history. And win or lose, having an elite offense is fun to watch.

We have the game in hand and every deep pass by the opponents was like a heart attack waiting to happen there was a 20% chance it was a catch, 70% chance it was PI, 7% chance it fall incomplete due to an errant throw by qb and a 3% chance we made a play on the ball
