Am I missing something?

This guy is being lauded as the can’t miss next Kyle Shanahan type.

He’s a young guy that has the look (so did Brandon Staley) …..and he’s the Lions current OC.

The Lions have been top 10 in most offensive categories all season, but is that the lock down guarantee for this guy to be the next can’t miss?

Maybe I don’t know him well enough, but he’s the undisputed front runner instead of all other top coordinators.

You can always come up with a list of reasons why he may not be all that he is claimed to be. For example:

  • He has the benefit of one of the top rated offensive lines in the league. Any team that fired their coach will likely have the opposite.
  • The year before he took over, their all pro center and their starting LT missed most of the year, so he had the benefit of having key OL starters back once the offense was his.
  • Goff is better than he gets credit for, will Johnson be able to do the same with someone like Sam Howell?
  • Etc
All that said, his Lions offenses have produced, and coaches with worse resumes will be getting a look this offseason. He deserves a shot.

One more post on this topic, I posted this elsewhere but it shows how playcalling can be irrelevant when you are getting beaten up front. Both the Saints and Lions are running the same route concept here (a shallow in front of a search route), but look at the difference in pocket when each QB gets to the second read. One OC is routinely called a genius, the other one routinely gets calls for his head, even when we often call similar concepts.

If Johnson ends up somewhere with a bad OL or QB, he may not look so brilliant anymore. That’s why I think he should be looking at the Falcons opening, they have a top tier OL with several first round skill players, and they can probably upgrade their QB room this offseason.

The only ones who can't miss previously proven, guys. Harbough is the only guy I would give keys to right now, but the Chargers are cheap and Tepper may not want to give complete control. Plenty of coordinators fail, but sometimes you find the next Payton, McVay, or Tomlin. You never know if you don't try.

I fully agree…..my question is when anyone is discussing future coaches, the media, message boards, talk shows…..it’s Ben Johnson number 1 choice without a doubt.

I find it odd.

The last 3 seasons to be exact.
