There was a thread like this earlier this year; unfortunately, it died out young, as so many interesting topics do on this underpopulated music board.

And earlier ones like

Assuming we're limiting this to rock bands (no Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Miles Davis, Nelson Riddle, Fania All-Stars, Bob Marley & the Wailers, etc.), my list:

The Beatles
Allman Brothers Band
Grateful Dead
The Who
The Rolling Stones
The Clash
The J.B.'s (James Brown)
Parliament-Funkadelic
The Funk Brothers (Motown session band)
The Wrecking Crew (L.A. session band for Phil Spector, Brian Wilson, etc.)
Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band
Fleetwood Mac
Talking Heads
R.E.M.

Second tier:
Buddy Holly & the Crickets
The Kinks
Velvet Underground
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Sly & the Family Stone
The Doors
The Byrds
The Band
Chicago (but only up to 1973/Chicago VI)
Lynyrd Skynyrd
The Minutemen
Los Lobos
X
Nirvana

Def Leppard sucks

Some might say they were the Nickleback of the 80's. But as someone who was THERE, I can tell you Hysteria was played at every party I attended (that I can remember) and people loved 'em. I think they had 7 songs from the album chart, which is pretty impressive.

Check out their Classic Albums episode. I'm serious! It's a pretty cool look back on how the whole thing came to be... Most of the Classic Albums episodes are great, by the way.

Not to be the first to disagree, but did you really just put Black Sabbath (with Dio)? Ozzy was far superior with the band, not to mention his solo bands he put together were top notch. Randy Rhodes and Zakk Wylde are 2 of the best rock guitarists (some would even put Jake E. Lee up there as well). I like a lot of your list, though. My list will be a little more heavy with some more recent bands (I love good guitar):
No particular order

Pink Floyd
Black Sabbath
Ozzy
Slayer
Arlo Guthrie
The Who
Hatebreed
Nothingface
Lamb of God (prob my #1)
Sepultura/Soulfly
Black Label Society
Megadeth
Tool
Incubus (anything before Make Yourself)
Foreigner
The Beatles
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
Jimi Hendrix and the Experience
The Doors
Rush

Everyone has their opinion of course, and that's fine. It's one of the things that makes the world go 'round. But to have The Beatles at 13? Behind the Scorpions? :idunno:

Def Leppard isn't even the best band with a one armed drummer

I think this is a hard list to make. I can make my list of my favorites, and that is nothing more than personal opinion. I might say "Name of Band Here" sucks on my personal opinion list but again, that's just my feeling. I wouldn't say any band sucks because someone has to like them. No-one sucks, but I might not like a band. As Duke Ellington (apparently) once said: "There's two kinds of music: good and bad. I like both"

To make a list of the "best" bands, though, really is even more subjective. How can you determine that one band is better than another. For example, in the rock genre, my choice for best band would be Led Zeppelin. They could improvise, they wrote a plethora of songs and, as importantly, they showed they could play almost any style. They put on a great show, were musically innovative and experimental. On the other hand, they had a reputation for being incredibly sloppy from time to time. Compared with bands like, for example Yes or Pink Floyd, Zeppelin was downright messy in the way they played. But that was their style and they wouldn't have been the same otherwise.

But that's the point, isn't it? I just made a case for Pink Floyd or Yes being the "greatest" over Zeppelin. So, really, my point is there is no best. There is only each person's opinion of what is best - and everyone generally has a good logical "leg to stand on" when it comes to that opinion. No point in arguing about it.
