Not really my favorite style of music, but there is plenty of good metal bands, and songs.

Rollingstone magazine has Metallica at the 1 spot, but are they right?

There is.....

Metallica
Black Sabbath
Guns N Roses
Pantera
Sound Garden (I think they are metal)
System of the Down
Rush
Led Zeppelin
Anthrax
Iron Maiden
Megadeath
Slayer
Dream Theater
Judas Priest
Ozzy
ACDC
And whoever I was suppose to mention.

So, who is the best, and why?

Metalheads have more pull in opinions, because they listen to this stuff more. I think I know who are the metal heads on saints report, so let's hear it.

Black Sabbath/Metallica hard to choose.. Sabbath was great, the innovator and really heavy for their time.

But, 80s Metallica is incredible too. Probably the peak of stuff I'd consider pure "heavy metal" music.
It's all very subjective.

I loved mid-80's Metallica, and Slayer too, but I prefer Megadeth's Peace Sells and Rust in Peace to any album by the other two. But at the same time I loved Motley Crue's mid-80's work.

And speaking of Alice in Chains, they might be better than 90% of "metal" bands, even though they weren't stereotypical "metal."

AIC was probably the most metal leaning of the Seattle/grunge bands, but I just consider all of that to be alternative rock or whatever.. and different than "metal."

Tool may straddle that line about 50/50 though and they're great at that.

It's not any band from the U.S.

Are you thinking ACDC, Ramstein, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, or some other band?

This is for the history books. lol

I think each band has a cult following. Iron Maiden fans are no exception. My old boss had an Iron Maiden figurine in his office.

Heavy Metal? Deep Purple, with Motorhead a close second.

A couple of the bands on that article's Top 10 aren't even Heavy Metal, so it's a pretty weird list.

A big nod to Antipop for bringing up GWAR, but they are Thrash Metal, not Heavy Metal (yes, I'm one of those who makes that kind of distinction). Definitely the best Thrash Meta band ever, and also, they're the funniest band in history, love them, so big props.

Iron Maiden was another band I grooved to in the 80's.

And AC/DC - Ioved Back in Black - but I wouldn't call them metal. More like hard rock with an extra edge and attitude.

Oh yes, TOOL. "Progressive metal", isn't that what they call it? Whatever it is, at least a couple dozen songs or so of theirs are brilliant.
