Boycott Olympics?

I personally think it sucks for the athletes if you boycott it all, but why does the IOC continually pick bad places to hold the olympics? Aren't they supposed to watch out for the athletes and shepard the olympics?

Let the games begin....keep politics out. I hope for the change that will change the hope of the change.

How can you keep politics out when the Chinese are doing everything in their power to round up disidents and 'shut them up'? It'd be easier if things just rolled along as they had been going without the huge crackdown. China brought politics to the forefront not anyone else. While there were complaints when China was first selected, there wasn't much outside of liberales taking a boycott stand against the olympics. Now, not so much.

Also, how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? [tm-jayden]

Why would we do that? We already do business and stuff with an oppressive communist country, what would be the point?

Ah, because sport is pure and money/capitalism is evil. There is already a nice history of boycotts

I think us boycotting anything on account of violence would be a huge hypocrisy.

Most every statement made by a politician/governing body is a huge hypocrisy. Plus I think the boycott is less about violence and more about oppression, which is a different road to travel for us.

Shoot the Olympics/IOC is about as a huge hypocrisy as there is.

I think the overall view of sports in America is that it's not so pure anymore. Even our cyclists are juicin'. :hihi:

Eh, I'm on the fence with boycotting the opeining ceremonies and doing nothing. I wonder if the World would just view our boycott as spoiled little brats always forcing our views on others.

I would be in favor of boycotting, but following the boycott by other nations like France (named in the article). I think the US should not lead this movement, only follow (if it happens at all).

The Olympics aren't political, so why make the athletes adhere to politics and possibly miss the one chance to be in the Olympics because of political reasons? Sports is a business, not politics. It's supposed to be friendly competition between countries. What happened to that?

Boycott the opening ceremonies. I can't stand watching them anyway.

For the record, I voted for boycott.

Sure, the principle of the Olympics is a pure one, but Its not all that squeaky clean. Still, I agree with what your saying.

I'm just thinking it shows a little odd when your country is willing to do the dirty deed of business with a country like China, but not willing to play ball with them.

Ahh, if only the Han dynasty would have lasted.

China just restricted internet access to everyone, banning any American/English websites in an attempt to quell the Tibetan resistance. Boycott all ceremonies, but let the athletes play.

Yes, they are. They always have been.

Agreed. I really used to enjoy the olympics and watch the majority of them. As I got older (and presumably wiser) I saw the constant influence of politics, juicing, money/bribes, judges cheating, etc.

I check the medal count every so often but to me the Olympics is even less about amatuers and love of the game than college football.
