He might be a sneaky one this NFL HC cycle and is worth examining.

Coen has taken the Bucs offense from good to outstanding in just a year and turned Tampa Bay into an offensive juggernaut in 2024, evidenced by a 40-17 dismantling of the Los Angeles Chargers and the league’s No. 1 ranked scoring defense. Prior to kickoff, L.A. was surrendering just 15.9 points per game. That was before Coen returned to L.A. – where he spent years under the tutelage of Rams head coach and offensive wizard Sean McVay – and just took over SoFi Stadium on Sunday. The Bucs came into Sunday’s game with the NFL’s fifth-ranked scoring offense (27.9 PPG), the third-best mark in total offense (379.2 yards per game), the sixth-best passing offense (241.0 yards per game) and the eighth-ranked rushing offense (138.3 yards per game). Tampa Bay scored 40 points against L.A. and didn’t punt once on offense while racking up 506 yards of total offense. Led by Bucky Irving’s 117 yards, the Bucs ran for 223 yards and were 9-of-15 (60%) on third down. Baker Mayfield was 22-of-27 for 288 yards with four touchdowns and one interception and Mike Evans led all receivers with nine receptions for 159 yards and two touchdowns. So with the Bucs exceeding their averages in points, total yards, passing yards and rushing yards on Sunday – expect Coen’s unit to continue to climb near the top of the NFL rankings on Monday.

After finishing 32nd in the NFL in rushing in each of the previous two seasons, Tampa Bay currently ranks fourth in rushing yards per game (144.4) and second in yards per rush attempt (5.2). He's managed to get more than anyone could have reasonably expected from Mayfield.

Really interesting video on him:

Since the odds are against us getting Johnson, Coen has gone into my top 3 and might be my top guy. He's done amazing things with not only Mayfield but the whole Bucs offense. Players love him. If he can do that with Baker then why not DC? Check out what Ross and the TB guy has to say about the 20min mark

I have a feeling Tampa will fire thier HC and promote him.

If i was the GM of Tampa I would do this. Can't let a rising star leave and keep thier so-so head coach.

Especially when he has helped transformed Mayfield into a moderate franchise qb. If he leaves then Tampa might lose that.

They’re going to win the division for the third straight year, fire their HC and promote one of his coordinators? That just doesn’t happen. And it would be a PR nightmare doing that to a minority head coach.

It's sad we live in a world like that. That didn't even enter my mind, i just see the OC as being more qualified based on Bowles performance the previous two seasons.

This is why I say you have to hire an offensive head coach. If you hire the defensive guy or special teams guy…every time you get a good OC you’re going to lose him. Tampa will lose Coen and have to find another OC. They lost their OC last year as well. As long as they have success it’s going to keep happening until they get a bad one.

Please no... not sure if he had any say in getting and signing Mayfield.... if so then I am scratching him off from the list

This is his first year as OC. He was the Kentucky OC/QB coach last year and the Rams "OC" the year before that. Canales was the OC when they signed Baker. But this shows Coen can work with a mid-tier QB, a 3rd round running back, and a 4th round tight end.

No thanks. He's getting a lot of hype that he doesn't deserve at all. Let's be clear about something. The Bucs offense has been on fire starting last season. Coen was not the OC then.

In 2022 he had a second stint as OC for the Rams when Kevin O'Connell went to head coach the Vikings. His offense was 26th in scoring. For clarity, the Rams offense was 10th best in scoring in 2021 before Coen came along and 8th best in scoring in 2023 after Coen was ran off.

He OC'd for Kentucky in 2023 and their offense wasn't good either and he was ran off. That's two failed gigs back to back.

Now here he is in 2024, OC'ing for the Bucs who's offense is just as hot as they were last year without him. Probability says the Head Coach is more responsible for that then the OC.

I'd much rather an OC who came into a struggling offense and turned them into one of, if not thee best offense in the NFL. That screams leader, game planner, and great coaching.

Coen is the exact opposite. Someone who failed once to keep a good offense going, the time after to turn a mediocre offense into a good one, then was able to keep an offense good. That screams to me as a coach who is in tune and answering to a better coach with whom he gets help from.

Last year Tampa was 23rd in the NFL in total yards per game, 17th in passing yards per game, literally last in rushing yards per game, and 20th in points per game.

This year they are 3rd in total yards per game, 4th in passing yards per game, 5th in rushing yards per game, and 4th in points per game.

Need to be more descriptive in how the Bucs offense was on fire last year because the stats certainly don't show that, especially given the NFCS was the worst division in the NFL last year.

That's what I'd do
