Can Saints afford to wait until later for a QB? (merged) (3 Viewers)

When laid out the way it was presented, it seems irrefutable. But it's potentially misleading, as we're missing the "other half" of the equation. How many 1st round QBs were drafted in order to achieve those results, as shown.

I don't KNOW the answer, but my perception & belief is that for every 1st round QB selected; another 2-3 1st round QBs are either outright busts who no longer play football, or journeymen. If someone can show me my perception is wrong, I'll adjust my belief.

You can see it for yourself.

There were a lot of QB drafted the past 4 years in the 1st round, so a lot of them are starting.... time will tell if they stay that way... although it isn't looking good Bryce Young and Kenny Picket; the 2021 draft was pretty bad, even if Trevor Lawrence is still the starter in Jacksonville.

So it's clear we need to take a center. 😜

The Bengals drafting of Billy Price is the only thing keeping center from being at 100%. Amazing hit rate. Easy to spot talent. OL in general seems to be much easier to recognize game.

They didn't think Burrow or Daniels were franchise QBs the yr before they came out either. Heck before this last season Ward was not even thought of as a 1st rd pick more less the #1 pick
Good point.

Like I said, only 2 this century, Mahomes and E. Manning.
I love Burrow. Like gang busters the 1st 2 years. 18-16 the last 2, no playoffs. Too early to tell (only 4 years).
Allen, he's very good. His playoff record not so good. He still has time (7 seasons in the league)....
Lamar: regular season MVP, playoffs afterthought. The older he gets...
Hebert: what has he done?

On the contrary. What you say makes my point.

Well, I guess you like to watch STUDS... I like to see my team win championships.
Well dude. Mahomes won four super bowls in this timeframe. You can't pin it all on these guy's individual playoff record when they all eventually have to get through the chiefs to get the elusive super bowl.

And honestly, I'm still not sure what your point is. Are you suggesting that we should roll with Derek Carr because Josh Allen loses to Mahomes every year in the playoffs? Like. What's your solution?

I don't think any of the QBs in this year's draft should have a first round grade...it's gonna push other QBs further up the board. Bad year to be selecting a QB imho.

I think all of this QB talk is just fan hype. Ill admit i do get excited as well with the prospect of Shedeur. However, I'm still excited about Rattler. Ive not heard this mentioned before about Rattler. If you go back and look at all of his throws, you realize, wow, this guy was in college the year before, and they inserted him into the line up, and he immediately looked like a solid #2 QB. Rattler immediately adjusted to the games speed and flow and wasn't intimidated at all. This fact alone makes him better than 80% of college prospects. Haener with a years more experience never adjusted to the speed of the game. So we will never really see him play his game. He couldnt get off the ground. A perfect indicator of a QB that has adjusted to the games speed, is a Qb that when everyone is covereed doesnt get sacked, but instead runs past the defensive front, and sprints past the LB to the side line for a first. The dude is advanced and ahead of his time. A second or a third year of growth then he'll settle into being a great QB. Mark my words! if not for the saints then some other team. I know that there is this anti-Rattler odor in the air, but its being fed by Saints fans with NEW CARR Fever.

Carr is still on the team and there's not a QB in this draft that's worth wasting a high pick on. Better to spend the high picks on guys that have a chance to come in and contribute sooner rather than later. If there's a guy to take a shot on later in the draft... maybe. Go get a QB in next year's draft when there are more weapons around him - or when the team doesn't have Carr's dead money hanging over their head.

My opinion is that Archie is just a couple of years from the draft. IF we do draft a QB in the 1st round and it doesn't work out, then we can look for Archie in a couple of years. We can trade up if needed, but who knows the future. We need a QB regardless and if one pans out before Archie, so be it.

Not a chance unless we have a top 5 pick. Whoever holds the first pick is going to demand a kings ransom and will have multiple teams offering it. Even those in the top 5 will likely be a bidding war that will results in a few first, second and third round picks. That's insane and will completely hinder that team for years more then help. Teams outside of the top 5 picking? Forget about it.

If the QB doesn't work out, we will probably be in top 5 anyway. 🤣

Well, dude, like, totally...

You can say that Mahomes won 4 SBs, but that's wrong on 2 levels: 1. the KC Chiefs won SBs, not Mahomes by himself and 2. the Chiefs have only won 3 SBs with Mahomes at QB.

I thought I made my point clear already, but here it is again:
The OP posted this question: "Can the Saints find a QB of the future in later rounds?" The answer to that question is yes, they can, or even not in the draft, as it was the case with the Saints. Besides, no QB is successful on his own, regardless of who he is, the whole team needs to be good to achieve success in the NFL, which to me, success in the NFL is winning the SB. And if the goal is to win the SB, the history of SB winners since the advent of free agency show that more SBs have been won by teams with free agents and backups at QB than 1st round picks.

Even the great Patrick Mahomes lost SBs to a free agent and a 2nd rounder.
