Can Saints afford to wait until later for a QB? (merged) (5 Viewers)

I'm fine waiting as well.

If Coach and his staff want to wait until next year so be it.

My point was we need to throw draft capital at the most important position.
Yeah, we can wait. Wait till next year. Cade Klubnik, Nico Iamaleava, Jackson Arnold & maybe even Arch Manning will be on deck in 26. & that’s on top of guys who went back to school like Aller, Beck & Nussmeier. Im pretty sure our FO & coaches are well aware of this fact & wont force it.

The franchise hasn't had a legit #1 QB since DB retired. I knew we would never fully replace DB but I also thought Carr had a shot of being an above average QB. There's a reason why the Raiders didn't want him anymore and I thought a change of scenery might do him well. So far, he's not the right fit for the team. What's another of waiting when next years QB class seems more promising.

We can and should wait if the teams doesn't think the right QB is in this draft. But, I wouldn't count on next year being this amazing QB draft and, unless things go horribly wrong, I think we're going to end up picking in the teens or twenties which means we might be out of range for the top prospects. So, part of this equation is whether you think a QB pick in the teens next year is going to be better than what you can get in the first this year? And I don't think there is any way to know that right now so the team just has to make their evaluation of individual players and decide if they want to take them.

As for those specific players, they all have a ways to go to prove they will be worthy of first round picks much less high first round picks. Last year's draft was a great QB draft, but nobody know that in the offseason before. The only sure bets to be high round picks were Caleb William and Drake Maye. Penix was seen as a mid-to-late round guy even up to draft day. And, Daniels, Nix, and McCarthy weren't even seen as first round picks before the season. Daniels emerged a few games into the season, but it wasn't until the very end that Nix and McCarthy emerged as mid-to-high first round picks. You just never know how things are going to work out in a year with injuries or guys just not progressing like you though they would. I mean, at the start of this year, people were talking about Nuss being a top 10 pick and he ended up going back to school likely because he was told he would at best be a mid-round pick.

You just have to evaluate individual players and stick to your board. But, at some point, very soon, they are going to have to spend a first or second round pick on a QB even if it means taking a bit of a risk or even reaching a bit. Maybe it's not this year, but is has to be soon. It's been about 44 years since we last used a 1st or 2nd round pick on a QB.

Carr is an above average QB. The problem is that he's been hurt too much, isn't getting any younger, apparently would rather not be here, makes too much money for an above average QB, and will more than likely be gone next year.

Yes, indeed, we can wait. Joining the other specks in the ocean of posts here that remind about how overall-mid this year's QB crop is. The list of potential names available next year is already more impressive, highlighted by none other than the son of the current OC :giggle:

He's only an above average QB compared to the rest of the QB's in the NFC South. Regardless of injuries, he's not the right QB for the Saints. Mikey brought him here and gave him a nice pay check and now we're stuck with his contract. Best of luck to him when he moves on.

He's not the right QB for the Saints, but that doesn't mean he's not an above average QB. His stats since he got here show that he is. But, as i said, the injuries have been an issue, he's getting older, will only be here one more year, makes too much money, and will want too much money to stay beyond next year even if he is willing to stay. So, it's time to get ready to move on from him.

I think the better question to ask is, can the Saints afford to miss on another 1st round pick? That answer is a resounding no. I’m not a scout. I haven’t watched any film or highlights on this years QB prospects. But based solely on the fact I’m not seeing any articles or videos or reports where GMs or coaches or talking heads are constantly talking about any of them tells me that there isn’t a sure fire franchise guy this year. Last year that’s all you heard. Qb this and QB that. Everyone was debating who was the top guy. Everyone was excited to see who went where. People were saying there were 4-5 legit future franchise guys. I haven’t seen any of that this year. We simply can’t afford to risk missing on our pick by taking Sanders or Dart when there are potential pro bowl starting quality players at other positions. We absolutely need to nail most of our picks this year especially number 9.

Has there been seasons where the QB class was thought to be very weak, but that proved to be incorrect?

Id think that would be a possibility this year. Dont want to rely on outliers as examples, but the knocks on this class sound similar to pre-draft scouting reports several prospects I recall that turned out to be legit franchise QBs.

of course they can. does manning come out next year? lol

What sure fire great player do you think will be there at #9?

The odds are that thos 4 to 5 elite prospects are going to be gone when we pick. Maybe that means we should trade down and I'd be happy with that if we do, but you can't always get the right value for that and if we don't like the options at #9 maybe nobody else will either.

Obviously, you don't take Sanders, Dart, or anyone else at #9 if the team doesn't have a high enough grade on them. But, if they do, then you make the pick regardless of the position. And frankly, the way QBs are overdrafted, at some point you have to reach if you want to draft one. That's just the nature of the position now.

Yes we can afford to wait.

My thought is if you’re not in love with a QB this year (I’m not), then use your picks to fill out the team and get some depth, then make your QB move next draft, trade whatever you have to to get him.

My two favorite QB’s in this draft would be Dart and Milroe. Dart seems to have that confidence/it factor that can make him very good.

Milroe if he busts as a straight up QB (high probability) can play the Taysom role for us lining up all over the field, so it wouldn’t be a completely wasted pick.
