The Saints CBs are good. Coming off a good rookie year, Adebo is grabbing camp headlines. And the Adebo Fan Club was formed only a few weeks after CB1 Lattimore was named the 2nd Best CB in the NFL. It just seems logical that a defense that can cause offenses to not throw to WR1 and WR2, then that defense can limit big plays and dictate that TEs and RBs become a bigger part of the opposing offense.
RBs start behind the line of scrimmage and the Saints have two LBs that can cover in space. The Slot position weapons like WR3 and TE are DB responsibilities and the reason not many slot players have big offensive production versus the Saints is Chauncey Garner-Johnson.
The Saints need to pay this man. The Loomis must know that the price for one of the best slot coverage in the NFL will only go up. From the player perspective, CJGJ may see drafting a CB as a challenge to his position, but it is not. With all due respect, CJGJ is a bona fide starter on defense. Did I miss something or did the Saints (1) draft a CB to challenge Adebo, (2) add veterans at FS and SS in free agency, and (3) there was no hint that there would be a change at CJGJ's starting position. There is no disrespect and no challenger, that's a lock!!
So, how do you make a strong DB room and position stronger? The Saints approach was to add veteran leadership -- replace a MJ with a Honey Badger. Mathieu has been one of the premier slot defenders and safeties throughout his career. Leader, savvy veteran player who reads QBs and just plays "bigger" than other defenders on the field.. CJGJ can learn in a DB room that includes a veteran who can improve his game. Mathieu uniquely fits the Saints defensive enforcer role Malcom Jenkins vacated. And, as much as I like MJ, Mathieu is an upgrade and the perfect position leader to teach what it takes to reach a Super Bowl.
Yada, yada, yada.. whoop tee doo.. yeah, those other two guys are good, but what about the FS? Marcus Maye is no slouch. PJ Williams will hold serve till Maye gets on the field, but having Maye is a big win for the Saints. Maye is a former NYJet. When no team needed a big, over the top, deep passing game to beat the Jets, Maye was making plays. Maye has been a league leader in pass defense is a versatile DB. Maye's range and effectiveness in pass coverage is a caution to good passers and "don't throw that ball" stop sign to the Baker Mayfield's of the league. And when you throw in CBs who are limiting short completions, then QBs trying to make connections on deeper routes will need to contend with Maye's ball skills.
Bottom Line... Bucs, Cards, Bengals, Chargers, and Rams are among the teams on the Saints Schedule that like the passing game and don't mind being one-dimensional offense. The Saints defense will pressure the pocket and force quick decisions, then the pass defense will do it's job and defend "every blade of grass" on the field. So, imo, you can take every top passing offense and feed it to the Saints defensive line, cornerbacks and defensive backs -- we like that kind of party!!
GO Saints!!!
