Coach Payton Press Conference Updates 10-6-21 (1 Viewer)

Makes me feel like Payton's approach offensively without Thomas was always to limp into the BYE, get Thomas back, and then open up the offense.
I’ve been holding out hope for that.

And in the meantime we lost 40% of our offensive line. 60% if you count Ruiz having to move/change positions.

And then our kicker couldn’t hit a thing

with or without MT, i think it was going to be training wheels until the bye
I'm not expecting a huge increase in passing after the bye but it will be noticeable, will likely increase passing attempts from 20-25 and up it closer to 30. If Winston continues to do well with that after a few weeks then up to 35 depending on the situation and will be a more normally balanced offense. If he handles that well then the training wheels will come all the way off and the gameplan and situation will be the only thing that dictates attempts.

I am excited about Stills, Juwan and Calloway. I think all three can be key players in this offense but they all wont really shine until MT gets back.

I'm excited about the defense too but they have to get healthy and stay healthy. We sorely lack a pass rush without Davenport, he is such a good player but just can't stay healthy.

Special teams also look really good if we can get Lutz back into form. Our new Punter has looked incredible.

Sounds crazy but the early season injuries could end up helping us. Of course, if it is anything like the past few years the second we get guys healthy they will all start dropping like flies.

I think Davenport played Sunday, couldnt do anything. Maybe Giants oline is that good.

Training wheels is one thing, but this offense has been just... horrifyingly vanilla. I think it has been forced to be vanilla because Payton needs Thomas there to open up the entire passing game. Just the coverages Thomas is going to dictate will dramatically open things up for the rest of the receivers.

NFL is all about evolving your offense and defense as opposing coordinators gameplan. Sean Payton may need another arse whopping to finally look in the mirror and wonder if the NFL has caught up with his play calls.
4 games in and think most teams have a pretty good blueprint on how to stop the Saints on offense (chip AK coming out the backfield and play man on the receivers cause they can't get separation) and beat the on D (throw at the rook).
